Yeah, I pretty much gave up on reading the article at that line. It would be pretty awesome if we lived in a magical world where the performance of code running on a web server didn't matter, but that's just not the case. To know that, one

I agree with this post wholeheartedly. At my company I've seen many projects fail, and a few succeed. Our most successful projects have also been the narrowest in scope. Once the project is successful, it's much easier to add on things one

Eh, the experience I had at my liberal arts school was very different from the author's, but with only 3-4 CS professors a lot of it just comes down to quality and philosophies of the faculty about what students should be learning. It just

That's a pretty ingenius hack. More limited in use than a real cookie (real cookies are sent along with every request; even for images etc), but still pretty cool.

Apple's approval process might not be /that bad/ if you are lucky or if you are writing a fairly average app that doesn't do much or doesn't do anything Apple cares about at least, But it sure is stinky if you're among the 0.10% that Apple

Yeah I had the same ideas when I was in school, but life consistently gets in the way. I took a year off to be with my GF who was going to school on the other side of the country. The job market was an utter wasteland. Nobody was hiring. At

That's well and good if you can afford to be choosy about your first place of employ when you leave college. Not everyone has that luxury. My GPA and/or degree definitely helped me get my first jobs which then gave me the opportunity to bui

See, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and I did quite well in school. I think a lot of it has to do with personality. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and an overachiever. I strove for A's in every class; if I was getting B's I took that as

Thanks for the link, it will be useful if I try to make a case for cassandra vs redis. Other questions: how robust are the clients (especially for php), and are you aware of any performance/scaling comparisons between cassandra and redis?

At the place where I work it's become clear that we need something like cassandra or redis. The lack of robustness in the php redis client is a cause for concern for me (as compared to libmemcached), and I don't know much about cassandra, b

In the magical world of programming, you are god (or at least a god), assuming you are a programmer. Programming involves creating something from nothing; what could be more god-like than that? So I guess such a religion would involve sel

Take these tips with a grain of salt. MySQL query performance tuning requires a lot more nuance than a list like this indicates. For example: 2. Use LOAD DATA instead of INSERT For raw insert speed this is usually true, however if you c

I've been 1.5a since 1.4 was released (or since I knew about it). 1.5 is mostly bugfixes. For my purposes 1.4 was completely unusable.

I would consider it anti-religion rhetoric, not anti-God. How strongly can one oppose something they don't believe exists? And which god exactly would he be opposing?
