If you use SVN, CVS or mercurial on a regular basis in your projects then you will probably need to use git in the future and the answer will be yes. If version control is not something you handle then the answer is no.

I hardly see a reason for panic. Apple having the trademark for the word "Apple" doesn't stop any apple seller from slapping the word "Apple" on every box of apples. As long as a word is used for descriptive purpose

I hope they take off. Google's Chrome store is nearly nothing more than a bookmarks haven at the moment. Firefox extensions are meatier, maybe because they aren't web apps in the first place.
