I have been burning birthday candles in little wooden heart shaped blocks. (drill 1/4" hole) They take about 20 minutes, and provide just enough structure and "accomplishment" to keep up the practice. I usually do this in the morning bef

How quickly can an issue be resolved if you are at home and something breaks? Is there a neighbor with free wifi? Do you have monitoring software that notifies you somehow? Is anyone else "on call"? If all is going well at work and you a

Don't make something people want. Instead take away a problem that people don't want to deal with. The uglier and stinkier the problem, the better. Then price very high and look for markets where people have more money.

That's a great idea! They should do the same thing to all of our utilities like water, sewer, electricity, etc. For what it's worth: A friend used to host his website. The night before an election, they had two expensive dedicated servers

I was at a distance learning software company that had AT&T as a client. I always wondered if there was a connection to the commercial. We were connecting classrooms with video and shared multimedia content. I even made a "Jazz" cour

AWS is a bit more expensive but can be cheaper if you use the right size or number of machines. For example, run 25 machines during the day and less at night rather than buying enough hardware to meet peak demand. Though there are some coo

For what it is worth, I found the Rackspace Windows Cloudservers (Beta - various sizes) to have amazingly fast IO (500+mbs). They were 4-7x as fast as the EC2 instances I tried. (70-120mbs) I was just using ATTO. Is this a valid test? I

Initially I moved savings into the business and started taking a draw. It might make sense to do this as payroll. I think regularity is important so you can ignore home issues and focus on the business. For several years, I've given mysel

Astronomy Cast had a nice show about space elevators. It seems that there are some serious problems. I think this is the right link: http://www.astronomycast.com/space-flight/ep-144-space-eleva... Click here for the mp3: http://media.l

You have really specific ideas which makes me think you can self study. Institutional learning can be wider focussed and might not be as useful. 1) I would suggest starting the business right now. You have a day job and can bank roll it t

I didn't realize 2b metric tons is the total of all that carriers move in a year. Eek, off by 1000. (I should get some sleep.) BTW: I think it's curious to compare the 19,000 bpd with the 645,113 bpd that the Alaskan pipeline moved in Apr

I would think that some sort of suction could draw up enough mixture to minimize the problem. For example, 5,000 barrels a day is 145 gallons per minute. ($3500 = 10hp 145gpm pump) I would think that they could hook a giant pump onto one

Sometimes it's a good idea to own a "desirable" item rather than go with the masses with a commodity. When it's time to sell your old convertible, you'll find a buyer. The old sedan is basically scrap metal.
