In my honest opinion, not defending Google (nor do i have any relation to them), they are just pulling the ol' Google+ tactic. Instead of the search engine doing search engine things it goes on to aggressively advertise Google products

Out of curiosity, if you dont want to be 'tied to the larger players', why not use metasearch engines like SearX? If Google does not have a great answer, Bing does, or Mojeek.

Heavily disagree. I own the server, thus the website. I should be able to allow or disallow any type of web crawler/scraper i want. Similar to how you cant easily regulate whats in a website without lawsuits and takedowns, you cant reg
