So sometimes the cost benefit of a rewrite outweighs the risk but I'd still say all those things you pointed out were the problem that needed fixing, rewrite really just fast tracked that no?

> Not surprised at all that most projects to modernize end up as smoldering craters rather than functioning systems. This is because people think rewriting is a solution. It very never is. It can help, rarely, but it's never the sol

The problem is more nuanced. Nobody can argue fines for socially unacceptable behaviour don't work. They do. The problem is that this method of ruling only goes so far. Eventually you run into situations where a significant enough port

Messenger services live or die by network effects. SaaS services with easily replicatable software live or die by building barrier to entry, usually this is done by building up a wall of feature add ons and integrations, in the case of Asan

It has the same problem of separating concerns (for what?) but losing important context making things harder to reason about. Normal form isn't always the best answer, sometimes a flat cludge is the better solution.

Oh come off it. Those user replaceable batteries were expensive as hell. It's cheaper to replace a MacBook air battery than it is to replace one of those old cartridge things, of which you could only buy from Apple.

Yup, super weird sentence. It reads as if it is either between us and the sun, or close enough that you'd see it roughly up to the same distance we are from the sun.

Its 2020. Apple has been hostile to openness since inception, see: right to repair or basically any Louis Rossman video on YouTube. Not to mention years of news stories showing how little apple cares for developers or individuals.

Why do so many in tech buy into a walled garden and then bitch about it later? I could say whinge but it doesn't quite convey what I'm seeing here.

Shallow or flattened structures are always what I default to. The example given does look better, but it's far more complicated to actually use. Focus on flat denormalized structures as your default, its simpler and more discoverable.
