Nah. I've worked at other FAANG companies and I'm afraid that none had anything close to the Apple level of red tape. I have barely scratched the surface of describing it.

OMG the red tape at Apple is unbelievable, but this is the first time I've seen anyone mention it. On my first day at Microsoft, I checked in code. At Apple it took nearly two weeks to get granted separate access to the apps's sou

I got asked to whiteboard the Dijkstra Shunting Yard Algorithm at TripAdvisor in Palo Alto. I didn't get the job, which I could have done in my sleep. It's way too complicated to code on a whiteboard. I would never have asked some

Surely the author meant, "Your Board of Directors Will Probably Fire You', or some other statement that makes sense in English. I know the horrible grammar comes from the original article.

This reminds me of the dispute between FAANG companies and big ISPs. The ISPs were saying "You are benefiting from our networks for free! Pay us!". The companies like Netflix were saying "Without our services nobody would wan

LAPD is worse than novel, it is already used in another context where it is very well known. Most people will already know this, but LAPD = Los Angeles Police Department, often featured in TV shows, films and the news.

One big selling point of the DX7 was it did a decent piano sound, which was never really possible on analog. Once ROM got a bit cheaper though, you could get a much better piano sound from new instruments like the Korg M1 which used interna

Right. Time was of the essence with this service, and it was still very reliable and scalable in its original simple form, because it leaned on a lot of existing Google infrastructure. Later on it got upgraded to follow the rules better.

When I first started at Google I got things done a lot faster because I didn't know all those rules existed and nobody stopped me. My service was still plenty fast & reliable. Eventually it all got rewritten by other people to do

I had to check Smoldesu's post history to understand this comment, as Apple loves people writing native software, even if they don't care if devs can make a profit and the store is a mess. Smoldesu is mad that Apple will not suppo

Other products I can think of in that early 90s period included "Small Blue Planet" from Now What Software and "Virtual Museum", a tech demo CD-ROM from Apple that included a real-time rendered globe.

There were a lot of 3D globe products being created in the 90s. I was one of the creators of Electronic Arts 3D Atlas which shipped in spring 1994. It sold two million copies on Mac and won many awards. EA was the publisher but we developed

It has been known for a while that people who switch from regular soda to diet soda (and make no other changes) do not lose weight. This is a crazy result given the calorie difference, so there must be something going on. Somehow the body

That's only the tip of the iceberg I'm afraid. If the singleton has methods that perform actual work asynchronously and different threads are hammering on it, all kinds of issues come up. Of course a seasoned developer is going to

People also bash singletons, so you can't really win. You can get issues with a singleton being accessed for the first time from multiple threads at once, for example, so you end up with more than one instance being created or a situat

This is how hard it is to get any sense into indoctrinated anti-vaxxers. The actual facts are rejected as propaganda and reeducation. They won't trust eminently respectable sources of truth like the CDC or the WHO. However, wildly untr
