Yup pretty much. Zero-copy deserialization implies one large read into a block of memory(or mmap) which forces a specific layout. From there it's straightforward to follow standard data oriented design principals.

Flatbuffers is pretty great, one side benefit of these types of technologies is you can also use them to structure your memory accesses. I've done this in Java to do cache aware reading to pretty great success.

Yeah, This American Life had a great podcast about the NUMMI[1] plant that covers this in great depth. Pretty fascinating stuff. [1] https://www.thisamericanlife.org/561/nummi-2015

As someone who's spent a good amount of time in both GDB and Visual Studio don't be so quick to knock the dev tools on Windows, they're really quite good.

All abstractions leak just in different degrees. Perf/memory is the most common but there are others as well. Your ivory tower parser/data format/framework is great until you need to fit it in 1/4 the memory or MIPS. Tha

You can steal a trick the motorcycle community discovered a long time ago, some water + soap on the windshield prevents condensation. Our '83 Vanagon doesn't have AC, it can be uncomfortable but sure isn't the end of the worl

Well, you can reboot the system while driving(both console and dash), nothing special happens other than the AC turning off for a brief period of time. Brakes, wheel, throttle all respond normally. Source: Done this a few times to clear bad

Yeah, that's pretty darn impressive to do that with a magnetic probe, no physical connection needed. Gone are the days of putting a sense resistor between the safe and battery, just pick it out of the air now.

+1 Just put in a bunch of Caseta dimmers this week and agree. I wish they had the same design as their other dimmers(one large button, rocker for dim) but they're still a great product regardless.

Agreed, it's not as impressive as in person but I've always liked seeing the Cushman Powerhouse #2[1] when I drive 101. I feel like we should take pride in our infrastructure and making them architecturally attractive is a great w

Ah, I see we're going to argue semantics here. You can get a PTO and 3-point on a telehandler, doesn't make it a tractor. What you're talking about there is a riding lawn mower. I also didn't say that there's any co

Not sure why you're talking about RLE and Gators as I was only talking about compact tractors. You could say the same think about Kubota as the assemble their B/BX models in the US(they however don't outsource the engine). Th
