Gave a talk to this effect 5 years ago, to an audience including enthusiastic developers aspiring to found this new breed of startups. I expected my comments might be polarizing but instead of arguments got questions which seemed to indica

Sometimes I think "melancholy" was a better way to describe the situation than "dysthymia" or "major depressive disorder". It might be that's just your personality and the way you look at life. Maybe if

Interesting that the title says "March 2015 Security Incident" but it turns out it was in February. Also interesting they don't say which days in February.

The noun form of "retard" (and the word "retarded", depending on context) is a much different thing than "retardation" or the verb "retard".

But there was no user story in which the user typed "../sms"! You seem to be encouraging thinking about scenarios like this in advance, a.k.a. BDUF.

Bizarrely, this only works for second-level domains however, and isn't disclosed in advance. Really, CAs shouldn't be throwing in "free bonus" SANs without customer authorization ever. It would be much better to have a place to enter the S

If you're in it to make money then you should absolutely have a plan for that. If you're in it to just make something cool, then do it. Sadly I think that with all the focus on startups here, the "hacker" in "Hacker News" gets forgotten so

This actually isn't true for Common Lisp. There is a distinction between reader macros and compiler macros, for example, which is relevant for allowing using special syntax be optional for end users. Certain things also need to be defined i

The best is to use GET with an If-Modified-Since header: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec14.html#sec14... This acts like HEAD if the resource has not been modified and like GET if it has. In practice this seems to be the go

For feature implementation speed, function point analysis ( http://alvinalexander.com/FunctionPoints/ ) is a good start. There are tables available that give rough industry-wide figures for hours per function point. However keep in mind t
