I believe you don't qualify for unemployment insurance if you are fired, as opposed to laid off.

Fired - removed from your position "for cause" - can be performance, breaking company policy etc. Laid off - company's business situation has changed and does not require your services anymore - no fault of yours.

since you said you were a regulator, hope you don't mind another question. This model seems to be doing a fairly good job keeping auto insurance costs under control. Is this regulatory model also being applied to health insurance ? If

Apparently car insurance companies are regulated in the sense that they can only charge based on the risk they are taking. since accidents are down, they might be charging too much and have to refund. So I guess profit margins are more or l

What about the massive increase in views from people being stuck at home ? wouldn't that lead to a higher ROI when people eventually spend ? In terms of ad spend reduction, How would this compare to regular media advertising spend (TV

The problem is some of these debates have consequences that you would be forced to deal with (choice of language, framework, architecture etc.) and needless pedantry can be a huge blocker to adopting a better solution to the requirement at

i would disagree with you on two points - work visas aren't subsidized. not even close. it costs a lot to sponsor and the workers pay taxes without benefits. not to mention the brain drain. - you've grouped people as working for c

Depends on Waymo or Zoox. If they have a widespread launch this year, then AV push will carry on no matter what. Otherwise, we might possibly approach the trough of disillusionment.

speaking from my personal experience, I've seen non-competes being pretty pervasive outside tech and some states like CA or MA, I've had competitors flat out refuse to proceed with an interview because I had a non-compete. whether

I wonder why the issue of being able to waive away your rights - forced arbitration, non-competes, severance packages etc. never come up at the presidential campaign stage. Seems like this is pervasive enough to affect pretty much everyone.

I think it's courageous because it is not easy to critique the country you immigrate to without inviting a lot of pushback. It implicitly feels like it's not your place to complain because you weren't born here.

The author seems to be well travelled and barring a few exceptions (close knit small towns, urban areas) his depiction of suburban life seems pretty accurate and matches what I've seen so far travelling to many parts of the US.

There is absolutely no implication that the author's views shouldn't be questioned. Would be great if you could also share some detailed thoughts on why you think the American way of life is better.

As a quasi-immigrant to the US myself, I applaud the author for having the courage to write such an excellent and detailed critique of life in the United States. I totally agree that life here has it's pros and cons. It seems that it i

I see a version of the QR code check already in Sams Club. A person at the exit scans your bill and it tells them what to check for. Otherwise they will randomly scan an item and it will cross-check with the bill.

I guess I'm just wondering if there's data on how often you these self-checkout bottlenecks. The way other commenters describe it makes it seem like it's fairly often. Hence the surprise. Although I agree just-walk-out scales

I'm surprised many people here mention lines at the self-checkout. I shop in a fairly busy Walmart and I never had to stand in line, even on Saturdays and Sundays. They have like 15 of those counters on each side.
