I think it is incorrect to compare ambitious (crazy?) utopian projects of decades gone with the mundane bullshit contract style work you describe. If anything, there is more of these crazy projects to be found today. It just so happens we d

This is how people grow. By fucking up, taking some heat, doing a little introspection, and correcting their mistakes. > Nor in the critic let the man be lost > Good-nature and good sense must ever join; > To err is human, to forgi

Facebook Research makes real strides in many areas. Disclaimer: I work at FB, but my employment there does not change my opinion. I worked at Uber and my opinion of Uber's "research" was different ;)

People born as men who transition to women, and I fully support them, have unfair advantages against people born as women. Would you agree with that statement? A better solution would be to allow a gender-agnostic bracket alongside women an

This is one of my favorite spots in Paris. I've found that there are far worse ways to spend an afternoon than in that lovely bookstore.

Its not so crazy if you think of every AWS product as its own med-large startup... That being said, that is a rather large number in terms of absolute company size.

My anecdotal data appears to point to the opposite. My first language (JS) involved learning: - What is even programming? What is a function? an argument? What is state? What are types? - JS itself - How browsers work - JQuery (do people s

I don't understand - what is the motivation here? The article is a little short, and it gives good insight into just how expensive this is (compared to other similarly classed potential space purchases). However, what I am failing to g

Not sure what that tribe is. As you seem to be serious, and insistent, my perception of the game was that it was rather limited. Most of the enjoyment comes from the social interactions it offers.

There is so much to unpack in your high effort, low value comment. Google the game, watch some "let's play"s. Keep your weird "housewives" stereotypes to yourself, its 2020.

Yes. I appreciate you asking. Today's gentrification is caused by wealthier people moving into neighborhoods, and making them less affordable. BUT this affordability reduction is relative to the price we were at before. The price we we

This is very cool. Pardon my ignorance about this, my bio education is limited. If I understand it correctly, would it be possible to purposely infect willing volunteers in order to find a potentially attenuated strain for a vaccine?

Affordability has nothing to do with gentrification. SF has backwards zoning laws, with insane NIMBY culture.

This is also the mindset that no one is owed a neighborhood - if you want to live in it, buy. If you are renting, too bad. You cannot both have the short term flexibility of rent and the desired staying power of buying.

You have it backwards. The scooters are not, and have never been, a problem. The real problem is feces and needles. The real truth here is the SF gov is greedy, and rabidly anti-tech. I cannot wait until this whole place is gentrified and c

Agreed. A lot of the privacy hullaballoo I read on HN feels like tin-foil-hattery. Who cares what kind of app you have tracking your GPS on your phone, when every surveillance camera in London knows exactly where you have been? If you want
