Certainly, enjoy what you want to enjoy. In response to your original statement here: >How does it affect your life that I listen to music encoded at 24/196? It doesn't, but Monty contributes to the Xiph project, which constant

Resamplers these days take advance of our faster computers to use near-brickwall filters, like a 1024-point windowed sinc. With this, you can create a steep filter from 20-22 kHz with better than -100 dBr attenuation beyond the Nyquist freq

Completely true, but the auditory nerve only "knows" what the mechanical part can respond to. If we don't understand how sound information is interpreted by the nervous system, we can still answer the question "is any ne

Right, this debate is not about determining whether two different audio clips A and B sound better. It's about determining whether two clips can be distinguished by our ears at all.

No, pre-echos are unrelated to high-frequency sine waves. And DTMF aren't what I'd consider high-frequency. I'm talking about 4-20kHz.

Yeah, this is what I can't fathom. We can detect exoplanets with telescopes with 0.01 arcsecond accuracy, hear whale calls 100 miles away with an array of low frequency transducers, and model the shape of structures by forcing seismic

Playing a set of high-frequency pure sine waves is the failure point for MP3, AAC, Vorbis, and Opus. Dial-up noises are close to this, which you can try encoding/decoding. And this is no surprise, since the point of the V.90/92 pr

Note that the difference is not large. A 128 kbps opus or AAC might be comparible to a 160 or 192 kbps MP3. So it's less than 2x improvement of file size.

Yes, adding any sort of nonlinear distortion to audio will make frequencies depend on other frequencies, i.e. audible frequencies in the output of an effect can depend on supersonic frequencies in its input. For example, if you add a 100 kH

The only issue with low bitrates is noise floor, so if you're hearing other distortions, it's not caused by the bitrate but maybe your room treatment or headphone drivers. A recording would have to have a hilariously large amount

This is pretty reasonable. 16/44.1 FLACs aren't that large, especially considering that 4TB HDDs are available for $70 these days.

So you think our senses transcend what tools have the ability to measure? Maybe that was the case in 1970, but in 2000+, hearing (and vision) is completely understood scientifically and far surpassed by measuring apparatus at every frequenc

I would think that a tutorial on convolutions this extensive would mention the convolution theorem. Definitely the easiest way to visualize for most applications. Or is Fourier space not assumed to be known by the reader?

This bug is caused by the Mac time daemon stealing 10ms+ of resources from the scheduler (perhaps because of it being a wrong thread priority, or the clock hardware taking a very long time to respond to an update request? who knows), not be
