Reminds me of copy-on-write. Operation can reuse input buffer if it holds the sole reference to it. In the scenario you described, you manually ensure and write this behavior for the rest of the pipeline.

After using darcs, I can never see Git as elegant, no matter how clearly it is a more pragmatic choice these days.

There was a certain hub that had a role in git's rise. Kernel pedigree may lend it credibility but I doubt it's the driving factor.

I think it's fantastic that you have the desire to help. However, I'd guess it would be best to consider different means of helping for the sake of all concerned. Maybe you could run a computer club or something for kids at a stru

Sure, but that's us evolving, not the animals, right? We have made quite a few other nutrient-dense foods that hack those signals. Evolution did not make cheese or chocolate in all these years, because it doesn't target our palate

On the other hand, those million years of evolution did not select specifically for ”delicious and nutritious”.

CTO at previous job was responsible for one of the better heuristic algorithms from the era before ML took over and our product dealt with this problem. I'm inclined to disagree with your assessment. Transcription is to polyphonic pitc

I have plenty of love for academia (PhD here) but it does, like most large institutions and corporations, show a tendency to become a huge feedback loop that interfaces only with itself and excludes the society at large, apart from siphonin

Besides, even for a single translation unit (such as a quick hello world) you could just #include the .c file to avoid setting up a makefile.

I don't like listening to music while doing routine tasks where thing A needs to be plumbed to thing B and mistakes should be avoided. However, when I need by subconscious to scan a vast non-verbal solution space, nothing is quite as g

Github's api [1] makes sense to me - there are lots and lots of query patterns and the previous Rest api results in quite a bit of link chasing and bandwidth burning. It would actually be interesting to see if someone could design a ve

I've always thought of compiler programming as systems programming. I guess it fits your definition of being something application folks interface with in addition to kernel.

Reading webassembly is not that difficult. The main challenge is that variable and function names are not available, but minified js is no better in that regard.

The handicap in Go [1] works amazingly well. I have had enjoyable games with dan-level players despite being at best conversant at the game. That said, I've also enjoyed such games immensely with no handicap, despite no prospect of win

I played with per-thread counters. The problem is you don't want them sharing a cache line, so having them inside the object is problematic. Having external per-thread counter arrays involves bookkeeping and indirection I could not mak

I've been looking for an easy way of keeping git mirrors of my hg repos, and this seems like it would be a huge improvement over the previous extension! Here's to hoping it lands.

Although I did read some of Riftwar, I was completely unaware of the transliterary aspects of the game when it came out. I do remember being impressed by the game though; it was ambitious and well executed and I think one of the classics fr

I’m not sure lifetimes are that much more complicated than the way C++ does implicit type coercion of user classes, resolution of compile time polymorphic functions, namespaces or SFINAE. I do agree it’s more like death by a thousand paper

To get an idea of the length of the tail: Suppose a deadline of 6ms to produce an audio buffer. If 0.01% of the callbacks choke on a lock, we get a dropout once a minute, which is quite a lot. This means we're interested in the 99.99th

If you want to poke around and have fun, Bela [1] is pretty good way to get started. It's got a prebuilt framework where you can just push a piece of c(++) that gets to run in a xenomai real time audio thread with predigested signals f

Volatile is, well, volatile. You can basically only rely on the fact that the compiler respects source order and keeps all reads and writes (instead of hoisting and reordering). I believe msvc used to put in memory barriers. Not sure if it

I wish people would not say "undefined behavior" to mean something that looks vaguely iffy or dangerous. It has a pretty specific meaning. [1] x84/64 has a pretty strong memory model. Bareback sharing of 64-bit variables has
