I actually think the chat bubble option alone will remove a huge hurdle for people joining Matrix and using it as a real chat platform. Anecdotally, most non-gamers, non-programmers prefer the bubbles. And it's a strong enough prefere

- You pay less money for a single public IP. A single IPv4 costs $40 nowadays [0]. A whole /64 of IPv6 addresses usually comes free when you buy your internet access. - You get extra bits to play with for addressing. Fly.io has done so

Unfortunately we'll always need the pipe to blow air outside. The heat has to go somewhere. Even with this invention, if they're converting heat to electricity, they will have to release at least as much heat as they converted to

This comment doesn't make much sense. First off, allowing you to customize the ports on the laptop is strictly better than not allowing you to customize them. If you want to use your USBC-to-whatever dongle, you're still free to d

Just holding the two Redis connections makes sense. I remember the Postgres post said something about modifying HTTP headers (a solution I liked), and I didn't know if this would be something similar. Actually, I just looked back, and

Fly is the only company that consistently makes me want to reconsider my negative views on "the cloud", and it's absolutely 100% due to their incredible blog posts. As for this particular post, it's great as always, but

Thanks for the links! I especially like the Mona Lisa example. I'll probably steal that the next time this topic comes up.

The problem is that people will naturally interpret colors on certain scales whether that was intended by the authors or not. The goal of visualization is to make the natural reaction the correct one. https://jakevdp.github.io&#x

Everything here is pretty easily accomplished using vanilla Python (numpy counts as vanilla at this point). I'm having trouble seeing what the advantage is of an "array-based" language over a well-designed array library like

Well there are "qgates" in the form of the transformations we can apply to qbits. And I would say that the operands of those transformations should probably be called qbits because that's where information is stored in the q

I love pandoc, but it explodes the size of my Arch Linux updates because of the way Haskell is packaged. I'll have to check out whether there's some kind of single AppImage binary or something. 30 seconds after posting the comment

I wonder if the right approach here is for HN to just use the public suffix list [0], and then sites like SourceHut should be added to it. [0] https://publicsuffix.org/

How would you know if something had happened? Are you constantly monitoring your network traffic? Who's to say that you haven't had data exfiltrated from your machine, or that you haven't participated in a botnet somewhere?

It sounds like you're thinking of relibc. https://gitlab.redox-os.org/redox-os/relibc/ From someone who only loosely follows the project, it seems like things are going really well.
