I'm making something in between [1]. That image is a good example for any perceptual encoder. At 50% size it's 600KB (487KB with current master), and there's still a lot to be unhappy about, e.g. a hidpi image like that can b

There are glaring optimization issues. Over 6MB of those 10MB is just one bloated photo [1]. It can be compressed down to 1-2MB. Moreover, if it was a proper responsive image, it would not be larger than 100-200 KB for most readers because

There's a huge problem with these improvements. They rarely make it to the original project. Luckily, the SIMD acceleration for progressive Huffman encoding was a rare exception [1]. So, alone with other improvements, it made this fork

Meanwhile, there are 2.8 MB of images in the article with the header image alone being a 1.6 MB JPEG (!). They can be reduced by at least 50%, given that the deringing filter works fine on contrast text/charts. Even more, the optimal f

Thank you for keeping it. Slightly improved your current best using optimage: 1_pingo.png - 8484 --> 8454 2_pingo.png - 18540 --> 18483 4_zopfli.png - 91846 --> 91838 https://imgur.com/a/opWft

Images in the guide can be further compressed by 7% (lossless) and 25% (lossy) using Optimage [1], and even these results can be improved. There are many nuances in image optimization, and sadly, some of them are not in the guide [2]. [1]

It appears to have the same problem as Photoshop where indexed images can only have 1-bit transparency. You can also losslessly compress it down to 2 803 bytes: https://imgur.com/a/SunI7 .

Good article in general but mixed with many fallacies. 1. Size is obviously not height. It's the area of the shape. There are complications though, e.g. negative space often adds weight. Blurring shapes is a terrible idea here. 2. Alig

This is just a poorly designed device front face, and the article attempts to hide some of the issues: 1. The scroll bar is disappearing under the notch when it's on the other side. 2. The chosen example has a solid color background wh

The SVGO-GUI has not been updated since 2015. I added out-of-the-box SVG optimization to my Optimage [1]. Fun fact: Node.js binary can be just 3MB compressed. ImageOptim [2] handles SVGs as well if Node.js is installed. The transparent JP

Apple's primary focus and the source of money is iOS. That is why macOS has to be 1) just noticeably better than competitors 2) inconvenient enough for average users to partially migrate to iOS.

I find it funny that GIFs are still being referred as GIFs [1] while most places serve them as h264 yuv420p MP4s [2]. [1] https://i.giphy.com/l0Iy1ZcHArR9aAQta.gif (2.7MB) [2] https://i.giphy.com/media/

The situation is messy. Take Facebook.app. The reported size on the App Store is 377MB, the distributed .ipa is 241MB. But it is a universal app which includes fat binaries arm_v7 and arm64 and all the graphics 1x, 2x and 3x. App Thinning h

It may be new but it is not a well-thought design. 110+ characters per line is hard to read and ugly [1]. Pure black on white has been discussed many times. While it satisfies min contrast requirements, it feels unnatural, and again, hard t

If the vast majority did care, there would not be a 419 MB Facebook app. I personally analyzed a number of apps and found image assets can be reduced by 30-50%. Not only caring, working on the solution.

The vast majority of people don't care about the app size unless it's blown out of proportion. If Apple started to charge for bandwidth transparently at market price, that would make a lot of difference. But right now if an app is
