So the AI boom of the last 12 years was made possible by three visionaries who pursued unorthodox ideas in the face of widespread criticism. I argue that Mikolov with word2vec was instrumental in current AI revolution. This demonstrated t

This is unendurable, this article didn’t actually say what are the names of the babies! To describe entire process and then leave out the result is just bad journalism.

I felt same way after playing bunch of American Truck Simulator. Why I’m doing this? I can just go and drive real car instead!

Fundamentally there is human with limited brain capacity that got trained to that. It’s just a question of time when there are equally capable, and then exceedingly capable models. There is nothing magical or special about human brain. The

It needs to re-enter, i.e. have the thermal shield, etc. This is what this Starship thing is all about - re-entry is really hard. Regular guide bomb is just going to burn or re-entry into atmosphere.

Any warhead needs guidance system. The question is if passive kinetic payload is enough or it should be something with explosives.

But it’s true for any orbital-based weapon that needs to de-orbit for striking. Once it starts retro burn you know it’s going for strike and know where it’s going to strike.

Depends on the mass of the object, of course, but at at this speed (i.e. energy) it will become a stream of particles going through atmosphere and vaporizing anything in it’s way.

But why not a kinetic weapon though? 1000kg tungsten rod coming at 5 km/s and 3000K will sink any ship. A bit tricky to aim though - basically the moment you initiate the burn for re-entry, you give 15 minute warning.

But why are you frustrated with Musk’s politics? The fact that one of the smartest people chooses to demonstrate their view is very remarkable. It does warrant critical thinking and examination. After all he could have kept quiet and ponder

But it makes perfect sense to drop out and enjoy last couple years of pre-AGI bliss. Advances in AI even without AGI will lead to unemployment, recession, collapse of our economic structure, and then our social structure. Whatever is on the

It comes down to what time is. I.e. what was before the Big Bang? If time didn’t exist before big bang, then speed of light emerged after big bang, and as such “changed”.

Another thing are gutters that require constant maintenance, and fail anyway. With good eaves and correct drainage around the house you can build without gutters like they did for centuries, and eliminate this finicky maintenance problem.

There are a lot of 45-year olds that won’t need RLE until 65, if ever. Why do they need to travel to Mexico to get ICL instead of doing it in US? Same thing with modern multi-focal RLE lenses. They got approved in US just couple years ago,

ICL is relatively new and is surprisingly little known. I learned about it by chance from friend, did it, and it worked out great, beyond any expectations. I see way better than with any glasses or contacts. I went with “mono vision”, i.e.

This article talks a lot about “cool roof” but doesn’t actually tell what it is. A "cool roof" is a roofing system designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Cool roofs are typically made of mate

But you don’t have to fuel it fully to go to the moon and back. It’s a bit hard to compare to Apollo since Apollo dropped stages at every step of the process, but it seems they used 70 tons of fuel in the third state of Saturn V for origina
