Yes! When I lived there, there was no bridge to Kinuseo, so you had to drive through the Murray. I crossed with a friend who had a lifted Dodge 4x4. It was more than a little un-nerving to have water starting to fill the cab... The other th

I lived and worked in Tumbler Ridge for about six years in the 80s and 90s. I never expected to see it on the Hacker News. Too funny!

My wife and I have had a fanless PC hooked up to our TV since 2011. Firefox is the only browser we use and we watch Youtube every day. If it broke, I'd know about it or hear about it. It never breaks.

I have read a lot of Metis history, and this passage struck me as oddly appropriate, although unintentionally so: "the practical wisdom that comes from being a tight-knit community sharing a common goal, watching each other succeed or

I agree with your math and your assessment of what's available at Github and the like. Perhaps part of the problem is that people (including many developers) treat git repositories as app stores. It seems unfair to complain that you&#x

I would take issue with "far more often." I guess that's true if you're searching out software on Github or the equivalent. If you're installing packages from your distribution's repository, there are tens of t

I would add to this that it seems like I can find the software I need in the Debian repositories 99% of the time. If I can't, it's usually because I want to do something niche. In those cases, it's on me to figure out what to

The purpose of joining a union is to gain better wages, working conditions, and protection from mistreatment by supervisors. Then no one has to give you specific perks to entice you into saying that you like your job. You'll just say i

I just wanted to chirp a "Thanks" here for all the work you've done to keep gopher going. I'm a daily user, have a small presence, and your work as an ambassador and steward of the protocol is greatly appreciated.

There was an impact on service. I can't remember the levels (I was 10), but I'm sure someone must have studied it somewhere. It would be a really interesting piece of history to dig into and dissect.

I try to get away from all that by hosting a site on gopher. Neocities would be another option, if you need the eye candy. I hate social media, going so far as to delete both my reddit and Mastodon accounts. But this is tempting. It gives m
