Actually for the small town I'm in, muggings occur at night between 12 AM and 3AM. My office is down an unlit blind alley. As a result I carry a flashlight and a gun. Should be fairly good at defense. Also train to draw quickly for bo

Better enforcement is a good idea. Seems to be worth the money. Or carry concealed permits. You'll have to repeal California's action that requires all new semi-auto's to have a unique firing pin. But then you don't have

Look at the US. We have a surveillance State. The US government keeps tabs on everyone. Do they care? Probably not, but you have a file. The British won't allow locking blades. They too have a surveillance farther along than the US

Christianity is even odder than that, comparatively to the pretty much every other philosophy. You only need to repent (not that it's a small thing). That's it. The story of the prodigal son shows this. Total fuck up son gets acce

I believe we're seeing the systematic destruction of human rights in the West. Many governments from former British colonies desire a centralized economy. They want to watch their citizenry. As we dismantle the West, it will look more

As an abstract statement, I can only agree. In reality, modern compilers can do some incrementally. So when you make a change in file A, the compiler will only change things dependent on A. In practice this chains a small number of file rec

I've disabled swap on MacOS. Works fine with just 16 GB. That's with Spring STS and at least one 2GB virtualbox for running ArangoDB. I do use Safari so it uses less memory than Chrome. I shut it off because, in my opinion, OSX is

I have issues with the Emulator due to needing virtualbox to run my ArangoDB instance. So I moved to just running Android as a VM instance within VirtualBox. The end result is a fairly nice setup. Edit, here's a good source for an imag

Fair enough. What I meant is that they will shovel funds into the markets in order to actually make money. The best way to do this is to have a higher risk approach plus no human traders.

Is value created by labor necessarily the only way to create value? Can labor by itself cost $10, I pay out $10, but when I combine that labor (a largely undirected force) with thought (scheduling, order placement, etc) I get a multiplier o

I am curious if they are going to make an AI hedge fund. This is how insurance companies make money. If they can create money without having to pay traders and analysts, it just might work.

It's nice to see that The Atlantic caught up with Thomas Jefferson [1], "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. " The question now before us is can we live with the ine

Yes. Take Andrew Carnegie as an example [1]. The dream is that you can eventually, through work and luck, make it big. You can also do the same to make i comfortable. For the most part that is still around. What we're seeing now is a c

The thumb, in this scale metaphor, is requiring an Apple computer to create software for the iPhone. From what I've seen, there is little to correct this. Even remoting into a Mac Mini won't help, it just makes things harder. So i

How do you know that something is extreme if you can't hear it? How do you engage individuals, hopefully productively, if you don't allow them to speak? If the answer is social norms, how do you prevent those norms from drifting
