There are other ways to tax for that. I pay for garbage and water, both provided by the city. I pay for $133/year for fire and police as a separate tax item. I pay a 1% sales tax for all non-food items to pay for roads. I also pay prop

Then you're showing a lot of favoritism. It's hard to universalize the idea that we should show favoritism. For example, historically we favored handicapped people. This was to their detriment. We paid for their subsistence living

Here's a counter-argument. Keeping property taxes means that old people have to pay yearly rent to the government to simply keep their house. In Florida that's about 2k a year for my home. That's fine when we have an income.

I wouldn't use Ruby/Python for web development given their know issues. I'd use Java/C#/Go/Closure; two of these existed at the time Twitter was made. While those two are more verbose, the IDEs make most of tha

From being on HN for years, folly is ok for a lot of VC backed startups. "We know Ruby! Let's do everything in that!", said the team at Twitter. Then performance took a nose dive since the language was known at the time to no

I bring up God's existence for this end, without such a being, we are left with a material universe. There is no measure within the universe for right or wrong. People need to accept that since all of your ethics and laws are fundament

Why? Nietzsche gets it right, assuming there is no God. There is no objective morality. There are no forms. The world is entirely material and all things are subjective. Even the uberman is just a subjective fantasy that Nietzche told himse

I live in Florida. My AC unit in my office is out. That’s on the second floor of my home. A beach towel sarong and no underwear. Modesty and cool.

I like the idea, but wonder if the same features are possible on a stand alone tool. For example, the device does the NLP there on the premise. It exposes a plugin API for apps. The app gets the text translation by registering a callback UR

Right. I thought it would be interesting to see it there were experimental findings on a large scale. For example put a massive solar array in the US SW. Transport the power across the country and store excess in geologically stable areas.

Cops should do the same test. There was an NPR story a while back about a school, mostly black, that did poorly on a standardized test. The school officials declared the test racist. The science teacher couldn’t find that from the test. He

I doubt it. NASA and the US government has lost its sense of adventure and conquering spirit. Too many people in the administration (not Trump's, but rather the deep-state) are 1) afraid of deaths, 2) afraid of being seen as colonizers
