I'm going to make a different kind of statement here. Something that I've learnt from my CL experience. When I think about solving a problem by writing new software, I ask myself, is a run of a mill problem like a website which serves data,

I think CL is suitable for projects which are fluid and have a very few people working on them. Speaking from personal experience 1 person can get an awful lot done in CL, very quickly. Compared to any other scripting language. I've worked

Google SilentEar its a type of earplug, very effective. About $10 or £5. Not sure about the vibrations bit, but people have to routinely grab my shoulder to grab my attention, as I can't hear any noise or voice when I have them on.

The PR skills of Iceland's government are terrible. They keep saying OMG we are going to go bankrupt. Surely then no one is going to lend them any money. I don't think other countries aren't asking for debts to be repaid. Then it's just the

It doesn't work. Almost none of my searches worked. I think it gives too much importance to title text.

SICP is a good introduction book. It is fairly deep too. The goal of little lisper is to make you understand recursion. If she gets that then she can get into SICP.

I think you don't really want to use length. Since it is a program evaluating last it might not be that bad as you have to goto the last element anyway. Here is mine: (defun our-last (list) (if (rest list) (our-last (rest list))

It's probably not worth learning another language for a web development project. You'll spend most of the time learning the syntax and the framework. Nothing which will expand your mind. Try a functional language like Haskell, Erlang or ML.

Simon, I like the work that you guys have been doing. I hope something comes of this. Part of what is disappointing is that until they don't release reasonable amount of data. Forget innovation, nothing will come of it. Case in point is tha

In some ways this announcement is typical of the UK government. All spin little substance. All transport information cost lots of money (GBP 50,000 for Train info), can't even get a free copy to prototype with. None of the Land registry inf

I write unit tests after I am happy with the function. By writing the code in a functional way and building code a construct at a time which I test as I write it. I think I get best of both worlds.

You need to work on your it sucks radar. In my experience all software sucks (even what I've written). The user is typically looking for a piece of software where something works, anything. So everything that you see can be improved. What y

Try postgis, it's really cool with postgres. You can add a column which makes evaluating distance between points really easy. If you want to find out what points are near a given lat, long.

If cakePHP works for you then use that. I'd look to build something that uses something that PHP and cakePHP is good at. For a while I've been thinking about a wikipedia for apps. Where people contribute code rather than text and help other

When reading code don't treat the task like that of reading a book, the best way I find is to interact with the code that you are reading. So it's crucial to get it to run, then get it to do something useful, then refactor it slightly by m

I've tried both Django and Rails. I tried Rails first as Ruby is a lot closer to lisp than Python. Personally I find Python a bit restrictive, but fairly easy to read. If you don't have a lot of experience with Rails/Ruby, Django is the cle

I think in most cases when you add a feature you end up touching everything in each of the layers. It's only when you want to change something that it's possible that you might just be restricted to one layer. I think the idea of the templa

I had a look at django recently. Last week actually. My advise would be to start coding. Make sure the thing is installed right and that you can talk to your database of choice and that your examples run. Then start coding. It's not too dif
