I think this is right on. I'd like to add a bit of a corollary -- people tend to like products that fit immediate and specific needs because they reduce the effort, mental or otherwise, associated with coming to grips with the product

I've done pretty well at Kaggle with just a Bachelors in American History: http://www.kaggle.com/users/19518/vik-paruchuri , although I haven't been using it as much lately. A lot of competition winners

I have a painfully personal acquaintance with suicide. I agree that an app couldn't have done much for it after a certain point. But what causes people to be suicidal in the first place? In my experience, feeling like they don't

This is awesome. I think the main thing I did when I was 15 was sleep.... I'm actually working on an application (www.happsee.com) for tracking happiness. Somewhat similar, but not exactly. It's already had some huge benefits f

This is an interesting idea. I don't know if I would be comfortable posting my address, though. Definitely not trying to make this political, but please do more reading about "Mother" Teresa before quoting her as an inspirat

I recently started making an Android application, and I wish that there was a way for it to ask for incremental permissions. Unfortunately, it is all or nothing (as far as I know). The app is a happiness tracker that tries to correlate thi

Finding interesting books to read is a huge problem for me. I have tried Goodreads, but its recommendations are poor. I usually just use random lists to find things to read. I really like the general idea of something like this, but a way

Interesting analysis, David. I actually got strikingly similar results looking at voting matrices and using SVD to turn them into two dimensions: http://vikparuchuri.com/blog/how-divided-is-the-senate/ and http

I'm glad it worked out for you! Your product looks solid, and I like the idea. I think one of the key takeaways from this (for me at least) is to have a solid support network.

Hey, good question. I actually started out building stock prediction algorithms, then realized I had no idea how to do that (~October 2011). I was mainly coding in C# and Ruby, and picking it up from books. I then found Kaggle, which has a

Congratulations, man! I did this 2 years ago when I quit the US foreign service (really stable job) and decided to learn programming. It worked out really well for me, and I have done some incredible things that I never would have had a c

That's an interesting way to go about it. Any reason for using shell scripts to coordinate the flow instead of things like Cython and RPy? (I don't shell script a lot, so this may be a silly question) These days, I mostly seem to

Great point. I still wish I coded in R more, just because the MTTC (mean time to cool) is so much lower. But, I feel like you can do the same with sklearn/ipython notebook/pandas if you ignore the parts of the "rigorous fram

I love R, and it was actually the first language I really learned to program with (for obvious reasons, I wouldn't ever recommend this). I can identify a lot with the "one-off scripts" problem of R. When I look back at some

I think it really centers around ease of use, amount of libraries, and community support. Django is widely adopted, has a long history of use, and is relatively easy to get started with. Performance is obviously important, but there are p

I like the idea. The fact that your Twitter account has a ton of fake followers is a bit shady, though.
