I'm learning Scala for the same reasons. I'm also working with my professor on building a scala web framework to do stuff for which Jave EE is usually used. Whatever little I know about Scala, I love.

I do freelance work from odesk, its not all bidding though, you can bid on fixed price projects, but you can also find jobs which pay by the hour. Mind you, odesk takes like 10 % of the payment.

the tag cloud is ok if its on the right hand side of the screen, and the results displayed in the remaining part of the screen. And like others already said, its pretty slow.

I actually like the grad school idea. Being in a nice relaxed college atmosphere while working on interesting problems would be perfect. All you would need is to not lose sight of what you got there for in the first place.

Oh yeah, highly recommend the book, a lot of his ideas seem controversial, but there are a few points worth taking away from the book. There's also a nice podcast on his website.
