Sorry about my previous snarkiness. Consider this a less obnoxious bug report: I again attempted to add a location. It appeared to work, but the final screen (following "We've recorded your info...") spits out: "Error... Array ( [prev_

Well, the distribution of asian SAT scores looks vaguely bimodal, so let's validate our preconceived notions by arbitrarily stuffing two gaussians inside. Very methodical.

Sorry to sour your future-casting, but this "killer app" has been a non-starter for many many years. Except for some niches where the flow of data is the primary thing you want to express, visual languages are too cumbersome. See http://

While the current vein of research might never satisfy your stringent definition of "artificial life", I think that's somewhat beside the point. The usage here is synonymous with "designer life", which is becoming an increasing possibility.

Let me preface this by saying that the 1971 doom-prophecies do cast a bad light on global warming and the change of opinion needs to be publicly addressed by Hansen. Now, having said that...this article appears to have been written in an Ex

Theory of Computation - this was really a grab bag of discrete math. We covered a little of automata theory, complexity, graph theory, and even abstract algebra. The problem sets were really hard, it felt like weight-lifting for my brain.

I think part of the reason neuro-imaging is so preoccupied with midbrain structures at the moment is because their activity is simpler and easier to correlate to the brain's inputs or outputs. With the huge boost in both spatial and tempora

At the same time, I think it's astounding how often k-nearest neighbors (a method considerably simpler than SVMs) is either the best or second-best classifier for a dataset. I'm not trying to pit SVMs vs. neural networks...rather I'm saying

While RT-fMRI is an incremental technological advance (it's just faster data collection with some spiffy signal processing) it hugely broadens the scope of fMRI's usability. The hemodynamic delays of traditional fMRI are atrocious. For the

Without PCR ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCR ) almost none of the biotech research of the past 20 years would have been possible. In the past few years PCR has got absurdly fast and convenient. I think RT-PCR is kind of mind-blowing. You

Why single out support vector machines? Sure, the kernel trick is neat but there's really nothing about them that stands out above other classification methods. It would make more sense just to say "the field of machine learning".

It depends on your age and level of education. Goedel, Escher, Bach was mind-blowing when I was 19. Four years (and some college) later it's a tedious bore. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "Memories of My Melancholy Whores" is pretty great. Oliv

I'm a bit confused. Is the DC term always in the center of 2D frequency image? If so, how does that provide any information about varying levels of background luminance?
