Idempotent is probably not what you meant. It makes sense to index on, say, `reverse(name)` (to perform suffix searches), and that function is immutable and deterministic, but it is not idempotent (except on palindromes).

A website is not a start-up, and there's vastly more to a start-up than building the software. I built the software for RunOrg ( http://runorg.com ) on my own --- private social networks for non-profits as a service --- but my co-founder's

I believe this is a great idea, but I disagree with some points of your implementation. I actually started writing a lengthy comment about this, and after about two hours of writing I decided it might look better as a blog post, so there yo

I'm quite a newbie as far as mobile web apps go, so forgive me for asking... is there a way to use your cell phone unique device identifier to log in on a web application ? Or does this article deal only with native mobile applications ?

Since you come from a .NET background, you can take a look at F#: it is based on OCaml, but fully integrated with the entire Microsoft stack. Most of the compile-time checking benefits of OCaml apply to F# as well.

I am utterly incompetent when it comes to inventing a good design. Almost every single module I designed has had its interface rewritten. In many cases, there have been several rewrites of the same interface because I did not manage to get

A language is mostly a tool to leverage the abilities of your team. I work best in a linux-based functional static typed environment, and I know OCaml well, so I use OCaml for web development. Other people are more productive in the Microso

Indeed. Last I checked, jQuery breaks the cycle when elements are removed from the DOM by going through all their event handlers and data members and dropping them.

And all of it stems from the fact that, JavaScript being a dynamic language, there's no way to statically determine whether the function will use 'element' or not (it could always eval() something evil and sneaky). Most functional languages

From my experience, PHP can be as expressive as OCaml in the hands of an expert - in different ways, of course, but the end result should be fairly similar in terms of size. The problem is that PHP achieves this by throwing any kind of comp

I wish I could say the choice of OCaml among all available functional languages was objective, rational and well-deserved... the fundamental reason is that my knowledge of OCaml is orders of magnitude greater than my knowledge of Haskell, F

Thanks for the links, I actually applied the second one on my own, without much success. Right now, I'm looking at a server with no swapping, normal memory usage, low processor usage, no IOwait, but serving HTTP requests at the speed of a d

Interesting question :P, but no: it's a vanilla 3.0.x Wordpress on a RPS server. The performance issue appears to be the server swapping like mad.
