Actually those Perl books are cleverly written and fun to read (like much of the official documentation) as opposed to the dry literature of many other programming languages. You may like Perl or not but that is a fact.

PHP in itself perhaps but I have seen major efforts being put into 5.3 -> 5.6 and 5.6 -> 7.x. One thing that broke badly was phpunit and related libs for mocking etc. This was a very vanilla PHP project by the way, no frameworks etc.

Perl is WAY better for shell-scripty stuff. It also has yearly releases and backwards compatibility is much better than for PHP. I think YOUR perception of Perl is what is outdated here. And come on, for "job control" type scripts

In many ways OO PHP is starting to look a lot like Java. Verbose and overarchitected code. It was a good templating language for C modules, not so good when you try to shoehorn it into solving every problem that you have.

BS. When a manager is managing a department rather than one scrum team understanding business and people management is much more important. Delegate the technical stuff to architects and team leaders. The worst managers are the top engineer

FB was definitively both a clone and stolen idea. Being first is not enough to succeed. Timing, marketing, sheer luck etc. is just as important.

My point was that Python written by someone that don't know how to write readable code is just as unreadable as "sysadmin" Perl. Well written Perl is actually very readable.

Actually I find well written Perl more readable.

I don't because it doesn't live up to its promises. Some of the most unreadable code I have seen was Python. Pure line noise.

Its a well known fact that languages are not detected correctly on GitHub (linguist). One example is Perl. So I would say this data is not 100% reliable, perhaps even very unreliable for some languages.

Working with text in general is what Perl excels at so it baffles me that you guys with 20 years experience was not able to make that work. Capture::Tiny is one module just from the top of my head. That module lists 10-20 other modules that

When the attacks are coming someone has to hold the flag up high. But seriously, shell scripting in JS or even Go is not a pleasant experience when you know of other tools. You can not deny that. And to be clear there are many tasks where I

And to anyone writing DevOps scripts doing it in JS/PHP: stop trying to create an MVC webapp when scripting Linux automation. Those tools suck to maintain since the MVC adds 90% stuff that is not needed in the domain and makes it much

For someone that involved in Perl I must say you are getting a couple things wrong. First let's address the talk you are referring to. That rant was about the authors frustration with Perl 5 vs Perl 6, the state of the Perl 5 core main

I think maybe what you see is a result of Perl actually being very backwards compatible and that maintainers of both Perl and important modules like web frameworks are working hard to make sure that we as users of the language can be a litt

Perl is still cool. Lots of new improvements happening. Perl 5 has yearly releases in case you did not know. Sounds like you could do well in devops if you still have your Perl and automation skills.
