Hacker News is good because it's a middle ground. It's not toxic like metafilter where users know each other well enough to form factions. It's not as big as reddit so that you lose any sense of community.

Metafilter is like any community. You'll enjoy it if you buy into most of the group think. Even hacker news has that guy who does great satire of how out of touch this place can be. I favor hacker news over metafilter specifically beca

Yes metafilter is a mess. The number of reasonable people who have abandoned that community is very high. Bad actors everywhere are really all the same. They build up good will with insightful content and active participation, then they use

They tried that in the US with Obama's mandate. You had a choice of getting of getting health insurance or paying a penalty roughly the same cost as getting the insurance. Trump getting rid of that mandate is one of the few things I&#x

In my experience offline twitch chats are the new irc. It's pretty much as close as you can get to an irc experience like gamesnet or quakenet in the early 00s. Discords are mostly a waste of time. Barrier to entry is too low/easy

Many of the opinions downvoted on HN fit the same mold. They're what I call "if you're an alcoholic just stop drinking" arguments. They're totally reductive and really just serve to stroke the speakers ego or shame

If the solution to a hard problem is that obvious and people aren't doing it then it's not really a solution and/or you haven't correctly identified the problem. Those comments are unpopular because most people can see t

Yeah 4chan is great but it differs from reddit in a fundamental way. You can have a normal thread where someone will casually drop the N word or other slur and it will just sit there, maybe not even acknowledged but also not downvoted or de

Spend enough time on 4chan and you'll realize reddit is a safezone kid gloves hug box. And 4chan isn't even that bad in terms of bad or illegal content so that goes to show how relative it all is.

Super common in NYC. People will yell at you if you stand in the left lane on an escalator. First random video I googled for nyc escalator shows this behavior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmCOjC_9Iyc

I switched to nicotine gum and it was just as bad. When i tried to quit gum I would wake up every hour, sometimes sweating. I was building up a chewing tolerance way beyond what i had with cigarettes. Nicotine is really powerful stuff. I be

The use of "such as" in that question feels weasely. I think plenty of people walk through a museum and feel that certain inanimate physical objects carry a nearly spiritual weight. That didn't mean they think there's he

Can someone explain how or why these are any better than a Jarvis despite being $100+ more expensive? I'm in the market and don't really see any major differences.

Ubuntu did it with Amazon. Mozilla did it with Pocket. I'm sure there are endless other examples. Dismissing windows 10 as merely "adware" is inflammatory to the point of meaninglessness. It's really the kind of rhetoric

It's pretty trivial to disable all of the telemetry in windows 10. I'm not saying microsoft should get a pass for such nonsense but it's a little over the top to act like windows 10 is DOA botnet.

I think what really galls people is the hypocrisy. The flat hierarchy turns out to just be a feint to mask screwing people. If the first rule is "everyone is equal" then you can never complain about inequality because that's

Anyone reading this article or talking about Hawaiian shirts is using Hawaiian colloquially. Maybe you live in a milieu where a distinction is necessary but for most people it just comes off as word policing.
