Too right. Oddly enough, the ebook publishing ecosystem has encouraged newer genre authors to go back to the serial-style storytelling of those old Golden Age magazines. Many of the most promising new sci-fi writers, like Hugh Howey or Matt

I don't think hardcovers are going anywhere. The hardcover book already represents a premium product. That may remain the case even if/when ebooks rot out the paperback market. They make great gifts, look good on shelves, hold up in librari

"Is the idea that most of those students won't be there in 2-4 years a big hindrance to this approach?" Yes. That's always the excuse in my experience, even when it doesn't make any sense. At my previous university job, my department used a

The Yahoo phone would work in Asia, where the Yahoo brand carries a lot of weight and you already see entrenched Yahoo-branded services (e.g., http://bbpromo.yahoo.co.jp/ ). In America, I'm not so sure, but it's an interesting idea.

You've never been burned. Hiring foreign employees is a lot different than hiring locals. Depending upon the country, sponsoring a visa can cost a lot of money and, more importantly, a lot of time. That lost time takes many forms. You'll ha

Good one-on-one teachers may not be available to everyone, true, but they can make a huge difference. Here's a personal anecdote. My first exposure to programming was back in 2005. I was living in Tokyo and agreed to do a "language exchange

That's my experience too. I've encountered this anti-technical BS at a company as small as eight. And you're spot on in that case: the two directors spent a quarter of every year at their out-of-state retirement home and otherwise didn't lo

And there you go. I work with several people who go to McDonald's three days a week. They refuse to try anything different even when they definitely have the time (fixed lunch hour) and money ($1 extra?) and encouragement (happy coworkers)

I'll throw my own similar experience into the ring. Let me take you back a few years, when I was hired as an editor at a traditional books-on-paper publisher. These people had an arcane process in place for getting their printed products on

To add insult to injury, there's a McDonald's within a few blocks of Bongo Burger (at Center St.) that's enormous and always packed. I'm not sure if we see this behavior because Americans are addicted to empty calories, or just don't want t

I was also uncomfortable with my standing desk at first. Several tricks made it better: * Started working out. Standing became much easier as my physical condition improved. * Bought an anti-fatigue mat. Crucial. * Learned to do a subtle, s

While I also own and love my GeekDesk, standing isn't for everyone. The cheap solution offered in this article is a good way for curious folks to experiment without breaking the bank. That out of the way, $1,000 for a good desk is a bargain

I (still) work in old-world publishing. Honestly, Mac Pros are losing their edge in this industry. My machine was recently upgraded from an old Mac Pro to a new Mac Mini. Even when I spam my machine with a half-dozen Adobe apps at once, I d

For what it's worth, Ruby has always been more about "want" than "need" for me. When I really need to get something done, fast, I'll choose Python; Python always seems to have an esoteric-but-very-necessary lib for every situation. But Ru

Here, here. Watch this problem explode among traditionally non-tech professions. Increasingly, you see super smart late-20s–early-30s professionals, with five or six years of solid domain-expertise, teaching themselves to code. They start u

Unless you need a library that's only available in 2, I'd use 3 at this point. But virtualenv takes the pain away from having to choose, since you can just create a new "environment" with 2 or 3 depending upon your needs for a project. If y
