You know I just realized after all these years I still don't quite know what a shell is. You have iTerm, Terminal, etc. But what do those do? Those are not the shells themselves right?

I've re-read Ousterhout's book about four times. It has influenced the way I think about writing software more than any other book I've read. I had the same reaction when reading this post.

I feel that it's worth mentioning that Kay and others believe the web browser has a fundamental flaw: you send data formats that the browser interprets rather than self contained "objects" that know how to execute themselves.

It's not clear what point you are trying to make because so far you are describing problems common to all programming languages.

Was mentioned in this thread, but I can also endorse qpdf as being a great library. It gives you a JSON representation of the PDF data structure. What's nice is that doesn't hide the underlying format but it takes care of a lot of

I wish the remarkable tablets weren't so locked down. It's one of my favorite pieces of hardware and wish there were more apps for it.

When you convince yourself of the program correctness, are you using techniques from the class? Any advice on reasoning about correctness?

This is how I feel about Nix. I've given it a try and it's quite incredible how easy certain things are. The problem is the Nix language and the developer experience are really rough. There's a chance that Nix could figure

I'm gonna keep using the term. Part of me wonders about master vs main and if anyone was actually offended by the term. Or did a small group of people get offended on the behalf of others?

I found myself doing this with o1 recently for software architecture. I will evaluate design ideas with the model, express concerns on trade-offs, ask for alternative ideas, etc. Some of the benefit is having someone to talk to, but with pr

Somewhat related - I wonder if LLMs are trained with a compiler in the loop to ensure they understand the constraints of each language.

Maybe a naive question but why wasn't the timestamp designed as seconds since the epoch with zero adjustments? Everything would be derived from that. I suppose it would make some math more complex but overall it feels simpler.

I disagree with the op and found the book to be very good. If you haven't read it, I would recommend reading it and judging for yourself.

I too write FP code but I found this book very valuable in how he treats complexity and his concept of "deep modules". I acknowledge that he does not cover purity and mutations as a source of complexity (and they are big sources o

I feel the same. I tried many css solutions over the years and always made a mess. Tailwind is by far the first time I'm productive with styling. I'm impressed with everything they've built.

What worries me about nuclear is that it requires sophistication to maintain. And that's not a fixed thing. Just look at Boeing safety today vs two decades ago. Why not go all in on solar?

I wish they adopted more of an actor model to emulate concurrency. Or at least made it easier. I think I introducing locks is a mistake for the browser.

I don't know anything about AI but I've always wished I could just upload a bunch of documents/books and the AI would perform some basic keyword searches to figure out what is relevant, then auto include that in the prompt.

I'm curious if AtomVM is compatible with Erlang nodes. Could you have a Pi on Nerves talking to microcontrollers? I've never really worked with hardware but this all looks fascinating.
