When Windows 7 is going to be perfectly fine and usable for the next 10 years?

The most important Android libraries do not come in jars because it is impossible to package Android library projects (projects that define stylable views, provide resources, etc.) in them. Just as an example, one of the most important libs

> PhoneGap sacrifices the quality of the UI for benefits in other areas You said it yourself. PhoneGap is an easy way to get a sub-par user experience and that is what matters the most, not development speed.

So? Hacker News is probably one of the worst designed websites I have ever used both from an usability and aesthetic perspective. It has nothing to do with the fact that this blog post is nearly unreadable.

What about them? Relying on the menu button is a very, very, very bad idea because there are devices that it doesn't exist on.

The hardware menu button is dead starting with Android 3.0 released 1.5 years ago.

If you can not see the difference in the touchscreen UI between the Wizard (or any other pre-iPhone device) and the iPhone, you have to be blind. Until the iPhone, touch-screen phones were slow, clunky and unresponsive. They had shitty resi

When a custom ROM breaks your 911 it is very possible. It has been broken in the past with some Samsung devices.

Well, I certainly can't say that as a fact since only the Android team would know the truth. However, from the video in question it's pretty obvious that if a touch-screen version of Android was in development at the same time in 2005, the

You just gave me my reference. The video in that article was released almost a year after the iPhone. It's pretty obvious that the touch UI in it is also a very early version of the Android we have today. Just one glaring example is how the

"Android" in 2005 was a Symbian/BlackBerry-style OS that was being prototyped on a QWERTY device with no touch screen.

Out of all the cross-platform toolkits Qt is the absolute best. For example, the Windows themes are literally flawless. It also takes into account so many things that other toolkits don't: native (file picker) dialogs, proper button order,

Qt without native UI isn't Qt. I am very interested to see how they will manage to handle the difference in UI concepts between the three mobile platforms.

Out of curiosity, why CentOS? The software in the repositories is antiquated. If you want RPM, just go for Fedora.

The only option that is even remotely realistic is Amazon's App Store, and that's only available in the USA.

Of course, good UI toolkits do exist for Java, but nobody just uses them. SWT and Qt both provide native UI.

I love Qt on desktops. It's amazing for cross-platform development and it's a shame that much shittier alternatives like GTK+ are far more common. But it's just not going to work on cross-platform mobile. The user interfaces in, say, Linux

A bit off-topic, but I really don't think that LibreOffice is a good alternative for MS Office. Every single time I try to do something in LibreOffice I find out that it's missing some incredibly basic feature that I need. Last time it was

No, it really can't. Every single GTK+ app I've used in Windows has looked terrible and has behaved in very strange ways compared to native UI's. It really makes no attempt to fit in: just as one example, see the dialogs in every GTK+ app.

Sadly enough hardware manufacturers keep plastering their ugly skins on top of Android. The Android that most people will see is going to be an inconsistent mishmash of different designs.

Definitely. I've played around with a friend's Transformer Prime for a bit and it was mostly pretty fluid. ASUS also makes far less modifications to the OS, too. Their devices are very close to stock Android with just some small additions,

Honeycomb and ICS aren't as smooth as iOS, but most of the lag that you're experiencing on your tablet is coming from Samsung's terrible software and not Android itself. The Galaxy Tabs are an embarrassment.

Android changed the order of positive/negative buttons in dialogs with 4.0 and it took me ages to get used to the new order. Just stick with the platform default, please: it's what users expect.
