A very good article! The author does a great job of painting a unified view of world history within the confines of his length restriction. Of course many things are only touched upon, and many others omitted entirely, but he certainly mana

The point is not the focus on their local history, but the exclusion of other peoples' history that enabled their own history in the first place. Generally, the view taught in schools in the West is that "civilization" as we

Go to Google Scholar (scholar.google.com), type in "Data structures and algorithms" (or some such) hit enter and then adjust the publication date in the side pane. BTW, Scholar is a search engine for academic articles and books (c

I use a 15" Lenovo and on the whole I'm quite happy with it. I like the fact that the keyboard has a number pad, and the screen is big enough that I can fit two Emacs buffers side-by-side without breaking up 80-char-lines. However

I don't have any experience with Ruby, but I did a Jython project last year and I was rather disappointed. For a start it's still stuck on the 2.x versions of Python (I find 3.x much better, esp. for things like Unicode support)

While I agree with the first part of your post, I would claim that it will be several centuries before 9/11 is forgotten. The impact it had on the world is just too big to forget within 100 years. 9/11 fundamentally influenced Ame

Excellent comment! Although of course one has to remember that the impact of terrorism cannot be measured purely by a body count. There is a strong symbolic dimension to it - if al-Quaeda had killed a few thousand people in some remote town
