I think the main reason for that is that you can then offer different authentication methods depending on what works for you and what kind you prefer. If the provider only offers passwords, than this is neglectable. But if you also use SSO,

I think they are still in some kind of learning phase / silent rollout and hopefully will fix this soon. I already can see that many users who are not that tech-savvy will also have big issues once it comes to managing their passkeys.

if the PC has Bluetooth you could use a passkey from a smartphone - besides that, if it's a Windows PC, you could use Windows Hello (with a PIN)
