Yes, and this is where statically typed languages shine (in my opinion). I like programming in a style that makes heavy use of the type system to enforce this. For example when writing an api endpoint to create a task I would typically dese

I was talking about the bill splitting apps that are used in situations where the same group of people frequently orders food together.

For my personal use cases (visible or invisible) push messages are the major missing feature for replacing native with web apps. And I doubt it’s possible to do without platform support. Twilio or other SMS based services aren’t a solution

I’ll add one more comment as a person who once worked on something similar to this. It looks like lots of people were working on “location based tweeting” around 10 years ago. It makes sense as around that time Twitter was growing fast and

Crazy indeed. Although I assume at that point they already had large parts of the SDK implemented for native internal apps and much of those 3-6 months have been spent on public documentation, signing infrastructure etc.

It’s not that different from regular Linux distros. A container built from a distro base image (like Debian or alpine in the first part of this article) is just a packaged version of that distro + your app. Distro maintainers apply patches

Why wouldn’t it be legal? As long as the fork complies with all software licenses. This happens all the time by large and small companies, orgs and individuals: Amazons FireOS is an Android fork, Amazons opensearch distro is an elasticsearc

I suppose vim emulation also works if the emulation plugin is good. The point is to make the switch and stick to it even though you will be slower for a while. And spend the time to look for better approaches when you feel like you are repe

I’m not the parent but I’ll pitch in on this as I have a few client projects using docker compose for production. No downtime deployments: I don’t bother for these projects. A minute of downtime in off-peak hours for a restart is fine. Data

In my opinion the only way to learn vim is to fully commit to it: Use it as your only editor and every time you hit a wall, spend the time to learn and unblock yourself. Productivity will take a serious hit for weeks, likely months. I did t

It’s a tool in a developers toolbox. Some use it, some don’t. Similar to the debugger vs printf debate. These apps can be useful for testing, developing and exploring APIs and they can function as GUI for services that don’t have one. For e

I’m currently prototyping a little database+api+cli todo app and I want identifiers that can be abbreviated in the same way as partial git commit hashes can be used on the command line. What should I use? I was thinking of generating random

A little anecdata: I was halfway reading this comment thread in my iOS DuckDuckGo browser when I switched to the YouTube app and refreshed a couple times to see what ads I got: some mobile games, an online car dealership, a shower head and.

Requirements are still a bit vague but I would probably start with a simple python script to process the text file and output the result. That can already be used on computers on the command line. Then you could wrap it up in a website usin

That last one is an interesting idea. I learned English as a 10yo with access to a PSX and FF7. Maybe it’s time to replay the same game now in French or Italian. FF7 is my favourite videogame and I know it well. That context might help when

Disc brakes have their use on road bikes in bad weather conditions. Descending at 90km/h on wet roads with rim brakes is not fun, especially on full carbon rims. I wish I had them in my race days.

Is it a good idea to use a completely different compiler toolchain for dev vs prod? I don't know enough about their internals but that seems like a recipe for weird behavior in production.
