How much of this is because CUDA is designed for GPU execution and because the GPU ISA isn’t a stable interface? E.g. new GPU instructions can be utilized by new CUDA compilers for new hardware because the code wasn’t written to a specific

There are also inline headset mics for sennhesier headphones that work reasonably well (they’re part of the cable that plugs into the headphones). More convenient than a desk mic imo.

VR headset with Valve Index controllers (~$1200 total) It was cool initially and Half Life Alyx was a great game, but overall it wasn’t worth the money with how little I use it and how many issues there are with VR and VR games.

It’s not exactly number rearranging, even if the government increases subsidy payments to offset the cost. E.g. say gasoline costs twice as much per gallon due to a carbon tax, but subsidies are increased proportionally to offset the cost

If you have something periodic in time you can get high time resolution of what looks like a single event by taking multiple periodic captures with tiny phase offsets. It’s a neat capability

This isn’t an interesting statement. I could pull any numbers out of a hat in (0, 1) as probabilities and regardless of the outcome could use the same excuse because there is only a single event to observe.

There’s likely a lot of performance still on the table if compilers were permitted to change data structure layout, but I think doing this effectively is an open problem. Current compilers could do a lot better with vectorization, but it wi

Types are the best form of documentation because they can be used to automatically check for user error, are integral to the code itself, and can provide inline documentation. The more I program in dynamically typed (or even weakly statical

At least for C and C++, why don’t GCC/clang implement constant time primitives as intrinsics? It would be useful in the meantime to developers working on cryptographic code, would provide better guarantees, and could emit useful errors

Surely there is a way to present some piece of buggy code to a candidate and ask what’s wrong with it (letting them use whatever tools they want, doing this on a whiteboard is senseless), let them determine what the bug is and see how they

You can get better properties by using the include itself to do the macro expansion, e.g. #define VECTOR_TYPE int #include “vector.h” This will let you step into the macro generated functions in GDB and doesn’t require putting the function

More or less. Binary parsers are the easiest place to find exploits because of how hard it is to do correctly. Bounds checks, overflow checks, pointer checks, etc. Especially when the data format is complicated.

Yes it’s a bad thing, both scientifically and societally. For science, having taboo subjects limits our ability to understand the world. For society, it obfuscates what an effective solution to societal problems looks like.

Worth noting that the metadata structure can be done more efficiently with a flexible array member, but it requires alignment to alignof(max_align_t) to obey the ABI. The structure will consume the same amount of memory (16 bytes on x86-64)
