We're just arguing about the word "managed" now. ChatGPT says: Is objective-c a managed language?...Objective-C is not typically considered a "managed language" in the sense that languages like Java or C# are."

By _managed_ runtime I meant virtual machine. The ObjC runtime is just a library that is linked in. It's much easier to drop down to the metal when you need to. > automatic resource management ARC is not runtime-based.

> I think Apple’s always cared about ease of development over the possibility of bare metal optimization I would disagree. Apple avoided managed runtimes this whole time and made people think about memory safety a lot compared with Java&

I agree that Apple has a lot of low-quality software. I found that ObjC made it easy to write spaghetti code if you don't understand the motivations behind ObjC and its SmallTalk-like OO approach, and if you didn't have good rules

The Windows development ecosystem is such a mess. It's amazing how Apple never toyed with any managed runtimes this whole time.

The trick is maintaining a full graph of all data dependencies through the entire codebase. Then migrations can be done with ease. But no one does this. They shovel data from one database to the next, with tons of little adhoc data stores a

Yeh RDBMS is probably the wrong choice for most apps. It was good for crunching sales data in batches back in the day. Everything today is pipelines and reactivity. My dream is to have a tool to model my logical data model and then it will

The problem with modern development is having to nail down the data model first. I wish we would develop software where the data model could easily change. To do this every data dependency in the system needs to traceable. Nothing does this

Git has biggest moat of all software, and it is stifling innovation. On one side it's good because everyone is using the same tool and we don't have to learn many different intricacies of other tools. But on the other side, there&

I wonder how many people have attempted to build what they want starting from an empty JS file. I think most people are scared of what they will find. That the decades they have spent twisting themselves around frameworks and learning all t

This actually worked surprisingly well for me. I hadn't gone to the gym in months and it was always a question of: why is this day going to be the day I start? I used this personalized chat-based service, where I said I will pay 1000$

I had an interesting idea for solo dev work recently. Pretend to be two people. One as the maker, one as the manager. Create a private Discord server, and create a second user account in another browser profile to be the "manager"

Legally, Twitter is not responsible for content posted by third parties because of Section 230. So Twitter will do what is best for their business. The problem is that for each of your statements, the truth is always subjective. And a sembl

You should design it such that everything is in one monorepo and the entire system can always be run on one developer's local laptop without ANY serverless/cloud stuff...and in a single process if possible. Then if you ever have a
