I read in the Code Book that this was how Clifford Cocks ended up inventing asymmetric cryptography. In fact, I recently took my books out of storage and put them on some shelves, so I can quote exactly. "For the next three years, GCHQ's br

Ah, yeah, right now it's switched to a map showing the position. Sadface. But the last few days it's been showing an interior view, and before that mainly exterior shots. You get a mission overlay a fair bit, too, which is a shame - I assum

The closure I wanted at the end of the story was for her to meet the thief. For her to explain the hurt and worry and anger he'd caused. For him to try to explain his reasons and lack of them. Also, I seem to recall this turns out to be inc

I work at an SMS aggregator, and I've never heard of such a thing. SMS are pretty speedy, unless something goes wrong and they get wedged, in which case priority messages wouldn't help you anyway.

I'm pro authors getting paid, but you can't expect users to like antifeatures. Such as an online mode that merely detracts from the game. If it adds more than it takes away, then users will be happy about it, even if the main reason you put

I always thought they had incredible longevity, and attributed that to Russia. They were a small English-language rag who made money off advertising bars - they were no threat to the powers-that-be over there (until they were). And the libe

Also known in the UK as a "one-ringer" or "missed call" (as in - "I'm running low on credit, I'll just missed call you when I'm there?"). Amusingly enough, my brother, who had eked out 10p of credit for several weeks this way, once got quit

Unless you rated in whether or not you read the article/comments, in which case it might still work. And of course, if downmod meant more "hide this sort of thing from me" than "I don't think this should be on HN", maybe you'd downmod more.

Even the BBC, usually so good, is terrible about this. And it's not like people haven't told them, they're just terribly intransigent about it. http://bengoldacre.posterous.com/trying-to-get-the-bbc-to-li... is Ben Goldacre writing in to

Yaay, Bob Fisher! I once dressed as him for a party, with a cardboard cutout of his face over my face. I'm sorry, this comment isn't strictly relevant, but I don't get a chance to tell that story very often.

Ugh, I had heard that too. Sick days are completely separate over here. I don't understand doing it otherwise - do you want sick people to come in? Go home, recover, and don't infect the office.

I understand it's pretty normal for America, but 15 days paid holiday seems so small to me. 22.5 here in the UK + bank holidays, and I don't feel it's particularly generous. Hmm...

If the half life of a modern bit of electronics is 10 years, that implies that in 50 years 1/32 of currently manufactured drives will still be around. I'd reckon the number would be a lot smaller, but given the terrific quantity of CD drive

I am not sure how much I want to bother clients by rating my responses. It's a faff, and provides no real reward for them. There's too much junk at the bottom of emails anyway. I'd also not want to apply it to all emails - and there's a fuz
