To see their point, imagine an American in rural Mississippi being told she cannot move to New York City to seek a better career. Tangentially, this is exactly the situation in China today. The central government restricts movement, parti

Although I suppose the complications of things like benefits and medical care make it probably un-implementable in practice. There's a case to be made that welfare states are immoral for this reason. If national social guarantees force yo

There would be no problem marketing those cigarettes as smoking cessation devices, they would then just fall under the same rules as other such devices (nicotine patches, gum) and manufacturers don’t want that. If they are being deterred,

I believe he means the FDA will impose restrictions that will reduce the use of e-cigarettes. Not precisely what "regulate" means, but a common connotation.

A lot of the radiation that the sun's core emits gets through its surface without interacting with it much. This is false. The sun is very opaque; photons from the core could take millions of years to reach the surface. https://en.wiki

I actually like this ad. The link in the article's gone 451, here's a mirror: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=948_1366967562 (trigger warning?) What does offend me is the attempt to stifle public discussion of the ad by censoring it from

You're the author? I think you have a parsing issue. I'm looking at barium: apparently the color-coding only looks at the number, discarding the unit (ug vs. mg). The MCL is 1 mg/L; for a measurement of "514 ug/L" (=0.514 mg/L), you code it

What's the interpretation of comparing a contaminant level in a monitoring well (in the soil?) with a standard meant for drinking water? The "total reading" statistic is a bit useless. 5 ug/L here, 10 ug/L there, does NOT make 15 ug/L total

I think the moons are okay. The very early algorithms we're seeing are primitive -- they try to avoid moons by thrusting directly away from them, which is a bad idea. When people introduce proper route planning, moons will look less overpow

It doesn't make sense to me either. If the FDA found n.d. levels of lead in all their samples, you would expect some of the new study's samples to have low levels as well.

Yes, virtually everything. Out of about 10,000 samples of 731 different food products, the FDA found nothing within orders of magnitude of these lead levels. http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Food/FoodScienceResearch/TotalD... pp. 69-80

Since the speed-of-light delay for 100 feet is 100 ns, and SSD latencies are on the order of 10-100 us, this shouldn't be a fundamental issue. Maybe it's caused by the latency to the disk cache (DRAM)? In which case perhaps you could separa
