The Google way of doing this is absl::StrCat() [1]. [1] https://abseil.io/docs/cpp/guides/strings

It's a nice article, don't get me wrong. Maybe it would make sense to establish a more fair baseline.

Not communicating enough info to rebuild the tree is a separate issue, but it is mentioned in the article so the reader is not left guessing. In the example however, we have a set of 6 symbols that would require 3 bits each to represent unc

Silly example. It compresses the phrase "do or do not" that has 6 symbols (d, o, r, n, t, space), builds a huffman tree just for these and then assumes significant compression by using 8 bits per character for the uncompressed cas

It is also useful to know that int128 is not supported as well across all architectures. For example std::atomic<int128>::is_always_lock_free is true for recent x86 architectures but not for PPCs.

I have very fond memories of my Speccy 48k. When I was a kid, together with the Amstrads, it was the most popular home micro. I wonder what part of the HN crowd has ever used one.

I remember reading one of Ron Graham's early papers on scheduling [1] when I was a grad and thinking to myself: I'll never have the mental clarity to achieve what this guy has done. What a mind. His wife shares [2]: ``On the wall

I'd been using xor swapping for years as x ^= y ^= x ^= y; until some point it occurred to me that this has undefined behavior in C.

Last year we were migrating part of YouTube's serving to a new system and we were observing unexplainable high tail latency. It was eventually attributed to mlock()ing some mmap()ed files, which ended up freezing the whole process for

Indeed it is a significant performance boost. I believe I was the first to suggest using the alias method for w2v. I had extended it to work in a distributed setting a few years back [1] which allowed me to scale the problem to a dataset of

These 240x240 IPS displays are awesome and dirt-cheap. The best "application" I've seen for them is a tiny retro game console [1]. [1] https://www.funkey-project.com/

Conveniently, we are not shown the type of n or its valid input range: if it is a int16_t or we know it to be upper bounded by 1<<30, that's proper vanilla binary search.

Regarding monitors, OLEDs have a much faster response compared to LCDs. See this [1] for an example. As of why keyboard scanning has become so abysmally slow, it's beyond me. You'd think that this would be a solved problem even fo
