Only available for people who sell themselves to Google or pay the Apple premium. Well, one could say it's a gift so don't complain. No, it's paid by the taxpayers. And French/German taxpayer money should not be used to

I haven't studied the legalize, but I assume if they put all answers behind a paywall tomorrow nothing can be done. I don't think the license says they must share.

Ah, I had no idea that Paypal would do SEPA direct debit . They don't offer it to me. (I don't have a German address, although I would have a German account.)

But the same publication says that only a bit over 50% of the population even own a credit card. And debit cards usable online are still a niche product. So in Germany, can you pay your Paypal bills any other way than by credit card? Honest

Easier for those who sell themselves to Google or pay the Apple premium. For people who believe in freedom it means a chipcard. Which can be a real challenge because then the number of sellers gets very small and they might be very far from

Yes, that's a good question why they don't want our (not living in Germany) money. I think the background is: * Paypal is not very common/popular in Germany so most local transport agencies don't bother * with SEPA direc

Not familiar with Apple, but I guess they have country limits like Google. In what country is your phone registered?

That's 44€ per day railway only, whereas the discussed ticket is 49€ per month including all local buses, trams, subways.

SEPA discrimination is illegal but a fact. Many sellers don't even let you enter an account number that doesn't start with DE. At the latest the Schufa check will fail.

It has been discussed a lot in railway forums, it seems to be a fact that it's rather hard to buy the ticket if you do not live in Germany. * the default payment method used by 99% of the sellers requires a German bank account * most s

Post recorded videos are good. Live streams are better. If I decide to attend a conference remotely I tell it at work and just spend the 2 x 8 hours it takes to watch the streams. Have done it for FOSDEM several times and in recent years te

I subscribe both to German iX mentioned in a sibling comment and to Skrolli (the latter happened to be in the mail today). Unfortunately I don't read a whole lot in either of them :( I should do more camping for longer than a battery l

I see 3 options. 1. The senators have no clue. 2. They support monopolies (or at least oligopolies). That's not compatible with US legislation, is it. 3. LLMs are dangerous like atomic weapons and all proliferation needs to be universa

It has happened in open source, too: OpenOffice was once well-respected, but 10 years ago we needed to switch to LibreOffice. (and I bet still not everyone has noticed)

All software is buggy. By translating it more bugs will be introduced. So I try to avoid using any translated software. I remember in Windows 95 (that's been a while) a little binary, probably ipconfig.exe was broken in the Finnish ver

For food to be kept in the refrigerator Danish, Swedish, and Finnish instructions differ by 1 degree centigrade each. Don't remember the values from the top of my head, something like 8, 7, 6 respectively.

Ah sorry, I thought I had written ballast of the current form. That was my intention, but I failed to type what I had thought. Otherwise there wouldn't be a point to mention that 50 years ago other, less stable ballast was still in use

The speeds you can reach on traditional tracks embedded into streets is much lower. Outside of cities where trams run at higher speed ballast is preferred. Modern tram tracks have a steel-enforced concrete base under the street, similar to

Of course it always depends what borders you draw. I started with steam railways. Of course horse driven railways existed before, but they were of a completely different load class. I don't know what clinker from salt mines looks like.

It's an exaggeration to claim that ballast would have been used for railway tracks for centuries as the article claims. Railways haven't even existed for 2 centuries. Although there are only 2 years left. Still in the 1970s, only
