I use openbox with lots of keyboard shortcuts to bring up apps/windows. I prefer this to tiling wm, which I used for a while.

I have recommended it to at least 20 people. I'm sure my girlfriend and close friends are tired of me bringing up the topic in pretty much every conversation. You did something great with that book. Last time I recommended it I said so

The author of the book 'digital vegan', the most impactful thing I've read in at least a year, responded to my post. I'm fulfilled :)

One effective thing I'm doing for myself (hard do to on mobile, or for kids in general) is to use the Firefox addon 'disengaged'. It hides upvotes, likes, and recommendations. https://github.com/a13o/dise

Yes, and also that even if you make 'reasonable efforts' to stay off the radar, algorithms will build a shadow profile of you from other people's interactions with you they track. For example, if you send an email to a gmail

There are books on the topic. 'Digital vegan' by Andy Farnell is a good entry point. He cites lots of studies and other books.

Very good point. The problem is that these issues are hard to understand and properly value for adults... let alone children at 7 and 9. Addiction. Privacy. Freedom of expression. Popularity contests and identity. Economies of Scale. Value

I'm in Berlin, Germany. Can corroborate that people here distrust bigTech to the point of not using it. It's a big question for our generation. I posted this using a gemlog in gemini: protocol but it has an html proxy so that

Well, cutting out "the entire future" is a bit dramatic. We may be building a better future by using smolWeb tech like gemini: My browser with 20 tabs open is a game of 'kill the tab that is burning the CPU'. I have to h

I was a big fan of zim, but I have to admit it's falling behind the times (search is poor, graph view not useful, no collaboration, no mobile, tags are second class etc) so I reluctantly moved away from zim to amplenote.

Don't forget asciidoc. Coherent, has markup for things like video etc. It's a superior format to markdown, a pity it's so unknown

Wonderful take on what's missing in current notetaking. Agree that text editors are not good for thinking (forcing the constraint of linearity "Great ideas don't flow out of us with a beginning, a middle and an end" I us

I'm on openbox (non tiling) and I'm extremely happy. I was on tiling wm before. You can do a lot with openbox. Now I open windows, not tabs, for browser pages. And search for window title to teleport. The spatial arrangement of &#

Geany is really fast, and according to typometer (From Pavel Faltin), it processes keyboard input faster than any terminal I've tested (linux). So A terminal editor doesn't do anything for me...

I can vouch for dvgodoy's content and writing style to be really ideal for beginners. He's a deep thinker and has been working on this book for months. I can also vouch for asciidoc been a superior alternative for markdown

Very good point. I hope what happened with AI doesn't repeat with Quantum (that is missing the train even though it started with a considerable advantage).

Did ghost.io not make a dent at all? it feels like aiming for the same market, with modern technology and faster pageloads. Not easy to install compared to php, that's for sure. This may be a blocker.
