I think it's worth pointing out that "in operation" here means it's running Doom. Which I was not expected, and somewhat blown away (heh) by. Very very cool.

I don't database, but I like to think I have some kind of intuition for storage space requirements, and this article was very confusing. Ignoring the indexes and just focusing on the main table sizes reported, we have: - String ("

Not in C no, since arithmetic on a pointer is implicitly scaled by the size of the value being pointed at (this statement is kind of breaking the abstraction ... oh well).

TIL the term "throw-up", thanks! It's weirding me out that Wikipedia's page features graffiti of the word ... SPLEEN to illustrate [1]. Wut. [1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throw_up_(graffiti)

This is cool and great and all, but isn't it a bit ... stretched to motivate this by the fact that the nozzle is biodegradable? I mean for a printing nozzle with an inner diameter of 20 µm, how much material would be wasted if it was m

It loaded fine for me, but that slash before the unit was a bit smelly. :| Just a tiny edit, but it's a rather core part of their message so they should probably notice and format it correctly before publishing.

The article argues that modern C++ has type-checked string formatting, so it does not argue for (unchecked) `printf()`, right?

According to Wikipedia, the writing was (mostly?) by Brian Reynolds [1]. There's an interview [2] which is linked to by the Wikipedia page about the game [3]. [1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Reynolds_(game

Tip: the next time you need to name a function, don't use "a stupid word that doesn't say much about anything". That's not how you're supposed to name stuff in programming. :)

This looked nice and simple, appreciated! A couple of minor C points: - The code seems to completely lack use of `static` for things that should be local to the implementation, such as `META_SIZE`, `find_free_block()` and others. - The head

Me too, but that particular picture was confusing. Shouldn't the board be with the human, 120 ft from the wifi access point being connected to? Now it looks as if the human screams at the board from 120 ft away, or something. Other tha

Neat! It's great when old hardware can be made better and given new features (and extending the life-span) by semi-simple means like this. It's also amazing to see how often a 3D printer pops up in these projects, nowadays. This p

By the way the rest of the (actual) saying that is the title for the Swedish book is "Only Bad Clothes". In Swedish it rhymes [1] which of course increases its power. I know it from when I was a kid 40+ years ago, and I think both

Somewhere I have a "RUN GCC" sticker from the Free Software Foundation that I was given by Daniel Stenberg (author of curl) at some meetup here in Stockholm. That would actually be kind of cool, I always end up not being able to m

Huh. I thought the article was vague on what exactly these extensions permit, so I'd thought I'd look up the GNU documentation. Surprisingly, it [1] was rather vague too! The only concrete example is: Accept some non-standard con

I believe the reasoning for the "Intel style" ("op dst, src") is that it reads more like "dst = src" which is how it's written in higher-level languages.

If you have (young) kids, having active/plentiful wasps nearby might just not work. Wasps can be scary, especially to children who have been stung before, and they are super-impractical around kids eating/snacking, too. "Clos

Agree, it was kind of comical that a web page complaining about text rendering performance uses some kind of design that a) only has relevant content on ~half the screen and b) causes me to have to wait every time I move the scroll wheel.
