True, but at least on the web I can inspect what network requests it sends, what the code is (even if it's obfuscated). Native SDKs are just a black hole.

There are no (very few?) universal rules in tech. The HN advice to buy instead of build is correct in the majority of cases where a startup isn't actually doing anything revolutionary on the tech side (and there's nothing wrong wi

I feel like it’s been accepted wisdom for a long time that native apps are more secure than the web. In the last few months I’ve found myself wondering if that’s actually true. They both have their own, different security problems.

I hadn’t heard that. Very positive development if so.

Improvements like web components encapsulating CSS make it a much better fit for component development. Just a shame React doesn’t support the API like other frameworks do.

In fairness the decision was made in 2009. I still don’t think it was the right decision but it feels a lot more understandable to have made that choice when looking at the frameworks available in 09 rather than 2020.

Plucking a single comment entirely out of context and presenting it as damning evidence against an entire company's competency feels kind of over the top.

Sure. But everyone is already flying by the seat of their pants here. That there isn't a backup video conferencing system set up isn't overwhelmingly surprising to me. (plus, training out of practise professors on two video conf

IMO it’s unfair to blame “low quality developers”. The industry has coalesced around React as the one stop answer to everything. Coding boot camps focus on it to the detriment of broader web technologies. It’s worth calling out when it actu

Two things: 1. AFAIK NTSC doesn’t support it, so North America never had it. There were equivalent standards but not one universal one to unify around. 2. Are there that many cultural references? I’m struggling to think of many that I saw g

Video files are large, so you usually have to store them on some kind of external disk. And it's very possible to lose an external disk. If videos are your livelihood then I imagine you're going to be a lot more disciplined than t

I'm sorry but this comment is both wildly off-topic and needlessly inflammatory, suggesting the OP is fine with the over-sexualisation of children? Come on. We're two steps away from reciting QAnon posts here. But in an attempt to

I had the exact same debate. One potential strength for my use case (cross platform mobile stuff) is that Nim actually transpiles to Objective C, which can then be compiled with Xcode. That’s a big deal because you need to provide bitcode w

Surely not. They are simply each better for different use cases. If you have ~5 tabs then tabs on the side is a waste of screen real estate. If you have 50 then on the top is unreadable.

That’s quite the stretch. Rust’s unstable branch isn’t a total Wild West, it’s just for new features that aren’t ready for stable yet. If you’re not expecting version 1.0 for quite some time it isn’t a problem to use an unstable channel.
