Desperately need this in academia. The academic literature is full of hyped-up phrasing. Probably safe to say the more hyped-up something is presented, the less novel it actually is.

Pretty interesting. Thanks. Is this relevant to all sectors of the economy? I can see it being relevant in e-commerce but how about in a field where the company has lots of data but also a proprietary technology? For example, a medical devi

Experts are all about output. If you don’t learn and take in input regularly I’d argue you stop being an expert.

You have time to decide what to bump, but not to decide what you like? Makes no sense.

As someone with firsthand experience in this space, it’s hard to get buy-in even in research world for neuroprotective agents. First, this word neuroprotective gets thrown around a lot. Lots of complex efficacy endpoints. Lots of biases abo

Without more context, this reads as failing upwards/humble bragging. All these powerful people helping something that seems so tenuous? That’s not a common outcome.

Random commenter #2, but I'm a genetics professor at a med school FWIW. Sugar is a major factor. The genetics of obesity point to a strong link to behavior. Sugar is addictive. Alcohol and nicotine are drugs, and so is sugar. There nee

Disagree vehemently. HHMI funds what’s fashionable. Find me a HHMI investigator without a recent CNS paper. As with Nobel prizes, the true innovators always seem to make their discoveries outside the power circle.

Not a generous interpretation of their argument. I’m in biomedical research which also wasn’t mentioned explicitly but I read it as a more general argument about finding something that is future-looking and helpful to many vs a few.

More relevant: Does it matter if human brains renew their neurons? We know that there is lots of redundant networks and plasticity, so if one cell goes down does it matter whether the gap gets filled by and old vs. new cell? With 100 billio

Professor at a med school here. Regardless of whether you think the specifics presented in this article (e.g., NSAIDS-esophageal cancer) are right, it’s great to see this kind of philosophical approach to biomedical research. We need more p

Molecular biologist professor at a med school here. This is what people are already doing. This reads as someone who doesn't know the field very well.
