Xero is not a Quickbooks hosting provider, so not really equivalent. Like suggesting DotNetNuke when WPEngine goes down.

Quickbooks is not involved. It's like a Wordpress hosting provider getting attacked. Wordpress is just software hosted there.

His net worth is listed at $4.1 Billion in Forbes, making this "cash out" about 25% of his net worth. Not 5%. The concern is that he's cashing out a large $ amount ($700 million) before the IPO, more than he needs to live, wh

I know it's just an example, but it really IS how you architect your solution. If you have a single EC2 instance without redundancy that's important to something, you're doing it wrong.

The irony of this being behind a paywall. An expensive paywall at that.

I worked in a company that used custom DNS names to identify the environments: - www.mydomain.com - stage.mydomain.com - local.mydomain.com The last one referred to the version of the app that developers ran on their own machines. So they h

The argument is that they immediately spent the $5.9 million on another player the next season (who they would not have been able to get due to the salary cap), who led them into the World Series. They traded that player away for another pl

#fail It's nice that sites out there are thinking "we should do something nice for Hacker News as a way to build buzz." But kinda defeats the purpose when they didn't actually do what they said they did.

The marketers using influencers are still hidden. An influencer is just an extremely cheap actor. Tom Cruise costs $20 million to get for this commercial, and 1,000 influencers costs only $1 million.

That's a pretty broad generalization. You don't know how hard some people work. Some athletes drink all night, do drugs, skip practice, and show up to work the next day and score a goal. Is that working hard? Some "influencer

Newport's book puts the distinction between deep work and shallow work. Calling up restaurants and trying to get them to switch to your booking software is shallow work. Needing to sit down and program the complete back end of that boo

Since the OP starts off quoting Cal Newport's book "Deep Work", we need to differentiate between shallow work and deep work. Running a startup is a whole bunch of shallow work most of the time. Work where you have to get into

I'm not sure Wikipedia is as "progressive" you think it is. Wikipedia is really poorly governed. Past admins say that the most common solution to any dispute is the "status quo". They just hope that problems go away

I know this might not be a popular opinion. But showing people how to hack systems... that seems like an OK thing to ban. It's a crime. Teaching people how to commit a crime has always been not OK.
