It wasn't completely under the radar though. Doctors in China were thinking it was a "mere" SARS outbreak, which was fairly close to correct. However concern about public health was not the top priority of the govt.

How do you measure competence? China plays whack-a-mole with its population. They certainly haven't eliminated dissent. They have the world's largest army as the only real backstop against opposition.

I think identifying pandemics is literally a defined responsibility of the WHO. Regarding which, the WHO-commissioned report states: "The WHO waited too long to declare a public health emergency of international concern, the panel said

In page 60 or so the document talks about how to impose laws and security without a govt. There's also a section on non-government approaches to make polluters pay. Presumably the owner of the well would end up much poorer for their ac

> At a meta-level, using unethical as a qualifier seems like an attempt to bolster an argument without having to provide a logical argument. I seemed like more of a disclaimer to avoid such ideological battles and deliver a nuanced view.

There is no universal right to immigrate to the US, or anywhere else generally, so immigrants can be subject to whatever requirements the local govt decides at any given time. The discussion here was about a supposed "free travel"

I've always viewed the Calvinism theory as a kind of anti-American theory that violates Ockham's razor. The desire to prove one's self by overworking strikes me as an innate adolescent approach to competition. Whether it'

I think the problem was that students need to also have a smartphone or something available during the test for questions and announcements or something, since the software locks down the testing computer. And there was no way to prevent pe

What is included in "taking from someone"? Am I allowed to purchase or gather cheap resources and make much more valuable products after applying skilled labor?

IP rules restrict others' production or ownership. Wealth is owning of the products themselves. You don't become less wealthy in that sense if another person makes a copy of something you own.

Well in the kind of political views such arguments come from, a victim would be someone who's rights were violated, not just someone for whom the interaction turned out to be detrimental but consented anyway.

I think the point was that human history predates the recent increase in depression. Having unmet needs you need to work to fill is the baseline state of all animals, and the unending grind to fill them is what we are evolved to do.
