My like or dislike isn’t the issue. Let’s just correctly price the externalities.

It seems there's almost no barrier to adding the infrastructure required for everyone to live in individual castles, carting themselves around in ever-growing wheelchairs to gigantic commerce centers designed for said wheelchairs (but

As an airline employee who sometimes faces large shifts in sleep times, I've become quite worried about brain health. Papers like this and Matthew Walker's recent popularity seem to have brought more attention to the issue. Last w

Had they paid closer attention to their airspeed. The aircraft could have been saved. By reactivating the system at such high speed, adding further nose down trim, there was no way to keep the aircraft level. Tunnel vision.

Ugh. I just read the report and maintain that the pilots acted incompetently. Though they regained control of the plane and turned off the stab trim system, their reaction took considerable time. The fatal blow, however, is this: distracted

That would be the autopilot disconnect button or, in this case, the trim switch, the pressing of which is the correct immediate response to this occurrence, followed by the disabling of the system using switches on the center pedestal. Whil

I don't think that's avoidable. The demand is too high right now. Personally, I'd like to see increased automation and "low-pilot" aircraft enter service.

In response to future 'trim system/AOA sensor' comments: Transport aircraft have a procedure to cut out a runaway/malfunctioning trim or stick pusher. Usually, this procedure is to press and hold the autopilot disconnect

A completely different situation, but a Las Vegas controller had a stroke while on duty not long ago. You can hear in the transmissions that as the situation goes on the pilots stop obeying and begin verifying instructions - https:/&

I often visit a pedestrian friendly small community in Queens. The number of very old people I see walking around is amazing. Tragically, the intersections are dangerous and people drive fast through the narrow streets. There's little

I think some of us who hate cars (me included) also picture development patterns where cities aren't so sprawling that those with disabilities would have trouble getting around. In your case, a walk/bike ride across town might not

How would this work when our cities have been so heavily developed to favor the automobile? I'm for road users paying for the roads or access, but public transit is so lightly used in most of the US and there's so little existing

I agree that that more focus should be placed on the system, however, with so many NTSB reports naming "pilot error" as the cause of accidents/incidents, I think we're still very much focused on the the pilots.

Maintaining the roads and infrastructure associated with sprawl places a huge financial burden on cities that often can’t be supported by local taxes alone, not to mention the cost to individuals. Look at how much American consumer debt is

It isn’t. Your footprint becomes much smaller once you get out of your car. There are walkable/bikable areas all over the place that are livable, but they may not stand out if one isn’t looking for them.

The scariest thing about Texas growth to me is the insane sprawl that seems to go unchecked in the state. Massive roads lined with gas stations, chain restaurants and big box stores, surrounded by cheaply built homes with four cars in the d

The previous flight had PIC stick shaker activation for the entire flight. PIC gave control to SIC. PIC realized the trim would stop moving with the STAB TRIM switches to CUTOUT. Flew the rest of the flight with manual trim and no autopilot

I'd consider that even more dangerous. Stick pushers actually activate before the plane stalls. These large aircraft are designed in a way that a full stall could be catastrophic. Stick shaker events (the thing that happens before the

For a time, I instructed airline pilots in simulators. The aircraft I taught had a similar mechanism with a "cutout switch" like this Boeing. Often, even when they knew it was coming, the pilots would fail to immediately shut down

While this is true, many of the aircraft that are ferried lack this equipment. Even plenty of airliners are still crossing the pond with just HF and SELCAL.
