Letter, yes. Spirit, I'm not so sure, it feels like Google and FB want to keep doing what they're already doing, and comply where they have to, instead of reconsidering whether they actually need all that data and need these dark

I think it's mostly the community and its culture. As another example, lwn.net attracts a somewhat similar crowd, has no moderation tools at all (it's extremely rare for a comment to be removed) and has generally interesting comme

This, exactly. Brian Kernighan (of K&R fame): Everyone knows that debugging is twice as hard as writing a program in the first place. So if you're as clever as you can be when you write it, how will you ever debug it?

It's already happening with new protocols not running on their own TCP port, but being 'tunneled' over HTTPS on port 443 (eg DNS over HTTPS). At some point we can optimize away the IP and TCP layers.

For someone who's terrible at remembering people, LinkedIn is a great extended addressbook for "I vaguely remember your name, have we actually met, only emailed, or did I just indirectly hear about you" ?

They don't \0-terminate the target on overflow, so you still need to test for that condition. So most people will have a wrapper around those to ensure the \0 is there.

Probably not... any form of partial encryption (ie not the full block device) needs to make sure no sensitive data leaks outside the encrypted parts (/tmp and swap? /var if you only encrypt /home?) Depending on the implementa

Or just use strings. That's what we do for basic webshop math - any naive attempt at doing eg a multiplication will break, requiring you to use the supplied math library (just like with objects...) But: with strings you still have pass

arrow functions are not just a function() alternative, but they solve the whole 'var self = this'/'.bind(this)' boilerplate. It's one of the best JS improvements of the last 10 years.

Why all the trouble with hashes - can't you just do it on the client and not having to store any data at all? "For tracking unique page views" if(!sessionStorage[location.href]) { sessionStorage[location.href]=1;

Actually, headers _do_ often work that way. HTTP says: Multiple message-header fields with the same field-name MAY be present in a message if and only if the entire field-value for that header field is defined as a comma-separated list Whic

It makes sense if you compare it to how listening sockets work - if I listen on 127.0.0.1:80, I can connect to 127.0.0.1:80. if I listen to 0.0.0.0:80 (all ipv4 addresses), I can connect to 0.0.0.0:80 And as a bonus, I can just 'telnet

Does this 'IPTC' tag survive common image editing? Or are they targeting it towards an external application? If it was just for recognizing re-uploads, they could have just stored the sha-256 hash serverside..
