That's a great article :-) Regarding traps, I struggled for a while with getting a robust and simple way to kill backgrounded scripts on exit. I would have a script do stuff like "sort bigfile & pid=$!; runlongtask; wait $pid&

I tend to think of colouring and debug output as standard shell script boilerplate. I typically switch to Python (or similar) when I need something like multidimensional arrays / dicts (not portable in awk), or in general want to run m

Also, there's no reason to use uppercase for all variables, it's just that environment variables are by convention uppercase so people seem to think their local vars need to be uppercase too.

Note that some of those long arguments don't work on OS X or BSD, so do some tests if you want to be portable.

A whole lot of seemingly useless science does end up being useful later on in ways we don't imagine. I doubt Mersenne and Fermat envisioned their work being used to secure banking transactions. However, mathematics is typically harmles

Fastmail is nice. I'd love to host my email on my home server, but from what I can tell, to send SMTP I either need to get a static IP (costly / impossible) or use some smpt routing service, in which case not that much is gained f

I like the idea of trying to combine good looks and usability with secure communications. But with no source code, and no mention of OTR, nor of free-choice-of-server, I'm not very hopeful. Perhaps they should just create pretty skins

S/MIME suffers from the same problem as SSL/TLS: everyone puts their trust in CA's, and CA's regularly get hacked, tricked, controlled by governments, etc. etc. It does not matter that you created your own private key if

You don't have to spend very _much_ money. I pay Fastmail $40 a year for 10GB ad-free IMAP+webmail (+2GB file storage that I never use, but I guess that's nice too), I find that very reasonable. It works great with K9-mail on Android (and a
