Is software supposed to be a low marginal cost business? Why would I need more engineers if my site has 50% more traffic?

Mindshare will go towards rendering javascript components on the server since that's another complex problem that's fun to solve. That's good! We shouldn't have to give up the productivity gains of tools like React to im

Judges would be absolutely right to punish lawyers or defendants that are bullshitting the court. They are wasting time and resources that would otherwise go towards cases where people are actually representing themselves in good faith.

Search "Marine Protected Areas", they are definitely a thing. US Presidents also have a habit of designating Marine Monuments as they exit office.

I'm excited to see more details on how R2 data is going to be replicated across different data centers in the future. I had assumed this was already operational based on previous blog posts so I'm a little disappointed to learn th

I'm mostly experienced with < $500 dive computers, which maybe isn't a fair comparison, but now I have the choice between the expensive apple watch or a single-purpose expensive dive computer. With the Ultra I can also buy or b

It's unclear if that is a limitation of the Oceanic app or the sensors. The watch waterproofing is rated to 100m. +40 meters is beyond the limits of recreational diving so it would make sense that the app no longer gives you decompress

Already preordered and am looking forward to using it for freediving. The UX on dive watches has long been a nightmare, they are expensive, and the replaceable batteries open them up to waterproofing issues. Most computers also treat freedi

I waited a whole year to bring my electric bike in and my maintenance bill was $300+. The higher speed and braking energy puts a lot of wear on the components. After that I learned how to do maintenance myself to save some money but I warn

This is being downvoted as a personal attack but I think Card is an interesting case that deserves attention. His books are steeped with empathy and the power of understanding others' perspectives (even alien species!). The fact that h

I've seen demo mobile apps that used the vibration motor to give haptic feedback, simulating the feel of buttons and such as you moved your finger across the screen. At the time I thought for sure the next iPhone would feature "Ha

I had to make sure someone had plugged postgraphile here. It's a great system. What impresses me most about it is how it grows with the complexity of your application. There are so many thoughtful points of extensibility built in, I al

I'm coming around to this way of thinking. My personal anecdote: I had my first child in June premature and it has been... difficult. There's no amount of energy that can get you through caring for a newborn. During the most diffi

In California, pelicans nearly were killed off by DDT but are quite common now. Santa Cruz Island foxes almost went extinct but are now very abundant. Bald Eagles are coming back to the Channel Islands as well.

All indoor cooking requires venting outdoors to be safe. The air quality concerns over gas stoves are a disingenuous argument to push for change for climate mitigation reasons. Most pollution from cooking is related to burning food not fuel

You'd have to make sure the diodes were exactly lined up with the strip in order to avoid false negatives. That doesn't seem like a risk worth taking to save a few bucks. Maybe some sort of cartridge system could be developed.
