Also worth considering is open source software grants for academics. This would increase the number of people in academia who are major contributors to open source projects. Added benefit would be that, as practicing software engineers, tho

A lot of people who do side projects do them for themselves rather than simply for improving career prospects. Many folks need a balance between being an independent creator, and being part of a bigger organization and side projects are a g

CD Projekt Red's amazing execution and story-telling on Witcher 3 earned them a lot of faith. I think that's where most of the hype is coming from, rather than from what's in the trailers or even gameplay videos.

A lot of good advice here already. Here's something which may be a factor in your thinking. This is what I've observed since I moved to industry post-PhD: A PhD helps one gain scientific maturity simply by giving one full 'm

Turning the output into a point cloud and changing the point of view is a better way to display the results. Often, methods that look good with the 2D depth-heatmap give pretty bad point clouds.

That's my thinking too. PCA completely ignores the phase shift symmetry and treats a phase-shifted sine wave as a different thing. One could definitely get something better if they took the audio-loops as translation-invariant. I thoug

Thank you for these great suggestions. I will make the dataset available eventually. It's about 15 gigs so I just need some time to do it right. I will let you know when I have it released.

Thank you for your question. At this point, this is just to see how PCA works on this kind of data-set. Normally, PCA is used to reduce the dimension of the data in a way that loses less information. It can be useful for saving computation
