Yeah. I think it’s weird to be constantly reminded of my colleagues’ skin color while reading Slack.

I’ve heard it spoken (never, of course, by someone actually from Latin America), and it’s indeed pronounced latin-ex.

> Latino/a excludes French-speaking Haitians The vast majority of Haitians don’t speak French, but if they did, why would “Latino” exclude them? French is a Latin-derived language as much as Spanish and Portuguese are, and “latino”

Latin doesn’t quite mean the same thing as Latino. The former also includes people from Latin Europe; so, for example, a French person is “Latin” but not “Latino”.

Funnily enough, the words “they” and “them” were adopted into English from a foreign language (Old Norse).

Only certain ones -- not AirPods, for example. They work as headphones, but not as a headset with microphone (for reasons that are not really Apple's fault)

If Britain’s leaders had decided not to have lockdowns, they would most likely still be in business as well. The distinction matters, because when evaluating lockdowns it’s important to realize that there are heavy costs.

Now I want to watch a movie about a post-apocalyptic society where one's social status is based on the size and rarity of one's CPU-jewellery collection.

That explanation doesn’t make sense to me. Standard (IEEE) floating-point math is deterministic; it shouldn’t depend on the hardware.

How is this showing anything is a feature about capitalism? The labor relations described in the article are not capitalistic. How are you defining capitalism?

Rule by unaccountable large organizations isn't specifically "capitalist", as it has existed in societies of every type of economic organization. By this definition even the Soviet Union was capitalist. I totally agree with y

The US is not quite an authoritarian country, but its justice system is reminiscent of one in many ways.

> isn't the scanning only happening on iCloud? No, the scanning is happening on local devices, but only during the upload-to-iCloud process. That’s the key difference that is upsetting a lot of people.

Maybe, but I suppose I don’t really consider SJ its own major city independent of the SF metro area. Which is totally subjective, of course.

Neat! I wouldn’t have expected this to be possible anywhere in the Southwest. There’s no connection — not even Amtrak, between Phoenix (where I’m from) and Tucson. I didn’t even know San Diego had regional trains.

That’s impressive. AFAIK in the US, the only two major cities you can get between on regional trains (i.e., without using the national train operator Amtrak) is New York and Philadelphia (New Jersey Transit from NY to Trenton, then SEPTA fr

You can freely buy alcohol in Turkey, a 90% Muslim country. 65% of people saying they’re Christian in a survey doesn’t mean 65% of people are part of the most strict faction.

Because Apple does not currently have code for scanning local devices for illegal images, and would have to implement it, which is a much higher bar than having already implemented it and just needing to add a few hashes to a database.

In the US, if I understand correctly, those would be true positives, and everyone who created, received, or distributed them would be guilty of a crime. There’s no exception in the law for pictures you took of yourself.

Something like that is unlikely to happen because the US is not — for now — an authoritarian state. Replace “FBI” and “Biden” with their equivalents in various other countries and yes, it’s absolutely plausible.
