The part that puzzles me the most was this comment about sscanf: > To be fair I had no idea most sscanf implementations called strlen so I can’t blame the developer who wrote this. Is this true? Is sscanf really O(N) on the size of the s

It can be more complicated than that, because in some circumstances increased virulence might also provide an evolutionary advantage for the pathogen. This article from snopes.com has a nice summary of the competing views: https:/

I think the question is why not rewrite just the LRU cache in C/C++/Rust (whatever floats your boat), as opposed to rewriting everything in Rust.

Not necessarily. For example, some of the more recent SARS-CoV-2 variants spread more easily because the virus causes a more severe infection, which is transmissable for a longer period of time. It's also not a guarantee that the virus

There is a race because the more people that are infected with the current strains, the more chances that the virus will have to evolve into newer strains. It is also believed that new strains are more likely to appear in places where the p

This article is light on the details about this being a GPL license violation or not. The final paragraph also makes it sound like Stockfish is under a permissive license (only requiring attribution) when in fact it's licensed under th

Alternatively, you can also move the gc "backwards", changing the black object. In Lua, sometimes the write barrier recolors the white child object to grey and sometimes it recolors the black parent object to grey. IIRC, the motiv

This is very important to remember. A lot of the time, the incremental GC is still single threaded. The difference is that while a two-color "stop the world" algorithm has to collect everything in one long GC pause, the three-colo

For more context, Derek Lowe recently wrote a very interesting blog post about this drug: https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2021/02/15/gl... This is not a miracle drug. It needs to be i

I agree with you that newer versions don't tend to get rid of optimizations. However, other python implementations might not optimize the concatenation. IIRC, pypy doesn't.

I remember watching a presentation by Tanja Lange and djb that explained that kind of thing very well. It starts with easy to visualize examples using "clock crypto" and then transitions to real ECC curves. https://medi

One thing I prefer about Mercurial is that it doesn't have a separate staging area. To create a new commit in git you need to run `git add` followed by `git commit`. In Mercurial it's just `hg commit`. Furthermore, if you want to

Do you know what this flag considers to be a "valid" control flow transfer? The documentation makes it sound that this feature can safely be enabled all the time. But the linked article suggests otherwise...
